{"id":130917,"date":"2022-01-07T06:17:24","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T05:17:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=130917"},"modified":"2022-01-07T06:17:24","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T05:17:24","slug":"who-omicron-killing-people-like-other-covid-variants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/07\/who-omicron-killing-people-like-other-covid-variants\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO: Omicron killing people like other COVID variants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that the Omicron COVID variant should not be classified as mild.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known by the WHo director-general, Tedros<span class=\"s1\"> Ghebreyesus at a media briefing on COVID.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking at the briefing, Ghebreyesus cautioned that although \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/05\/france-detects-new-covid-19-variant-ihu-more-infectious-than-omicron\/\">Omicron<\/a> does appear to be less severe compared to Delta especially in those vaccinated, it does not mean it should be categorised as mild\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cJust like previous variants, Omicron is hospitalising people and it is killing people,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIn fact, the tsunami of cases is so huge and quick, that it is overwhelming health systems around the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHospitals are becoming overcrowded and understaffed, which further results in preventable deaths from not only COVID-19 but other diseases and injuries where patients cannot receive timely care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFirst-generation vaccines may not stop all infections and transmission but they remain highly effective in reducing hospitalisation and death from this virus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The director-general also said vaccine inequity undermines global economic recovery, adding that the Alpha, Beta, Delta, Gamma and Omicron variants reflect that because of low vaccination rates, \u201cperfect conditions for the emergence of virus variants\u201d have been created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cLast week, the highest number of COVID-19 cases were reported so far in the pandemic,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAnd we know, for certain, that this is an underestimate of cases because reported numbers do not reflect the backlog of testing around the holidays, the number of positive self-tests not registered, and burdened surveillance systems that miss cases around the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAt the current pace of vaccine rollout, 109 countries would miss out on fully vaccinating 70% of their populations by the start of July 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe essence of the disparity is that some countries are moving toward vaccinating citizens a fourth time, while others haven\u2019t even had enough regular supply to vaccinate their health workers and those at most risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cBooster after booster in a small number of countries will not end a pandemic while billions remain completely unprotected.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">But we can and must turn it around.
