{"id":131122,"date":"2022-01-07T13:01:22","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T12:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=131122"},"modified":"2022-01-07T13:01:22","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T12:01:22","slug":"new-tax-on-carbonated-drinks-will-affect-domestic-producers-lcci-tells-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/07\/new-tax-on-carbonated-drinks-will-affect-domestic-producers-lcci-tells-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"New tax on carbonated drinks will affect domestic producers, LCCI tells FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has criticised the newly-introduced excise duty of N10\/litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LCCI said the newly-imposed excise duty on carbonated drinks would have a ripple effect on the prices and demand of the commodity, resulting in the loss of jobs due to reduced production activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the director-general of LCCI,\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chinyere Almona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that the federal government on Wednesday had announced the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0introduction of excise duty of N10\/litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages, as contained in the 2021 Finance Act.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the policy, the prices of carbonated drinks may spike across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LCCI urged FG to protect domestic producers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/06\/man-condemns-new-tax-on-carbonated-drinks\/\">carbonated drinks<\/a> from unfair competition, following the newly-introduced excise duty on the commodity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Reacting to the recent development, Almona said: \u201cThe federal government has announced it will charge an excise levy of N10 per litre on all non-alcoholic carbonated sweetened beverages to discourage excessive sugar consumption and boost revenue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe immediate concerns are the likely increase in prices which may lead to a decrease in demand and, consequently, loss of jobs due to a reduction in production activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe prohibition on imported drinks should be better enforced to protect domestic production from unfair competition in the face of the high cost of production in Nigeria.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The chamber urged the FG to use the revenue generated from the levy to improve the health sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">LCCI also recommended an upward review of the budget allocation to the health sector \u2014 in the next 10 years \u2014 to more than N1 trillion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe chamber supports both the government\u2019s revenue drive and the pro-health considerations of several stakeholders,\u201d LCCI said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe, however, recommend that the realized revenue from these levies be channelled into improving the country\u2019s grossly inadequate health infrastructure. The allocation to the health sector in the 2022 federal budget of N463bn should be reviewed upward to the region of a trillion naira invested into the sector in the next ten years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe chamber is also concerned about the government\u2019s stance on the enforcement of revenue targets on government-owned enterprises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe operations of these Government-Owned Enterprises should not build up into a hostile business environment where the private sector will find it challenging to thrive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAnd beyond the levying of taxes on carbonated drinks to force a reduction in consumption, we urge the various public health agencies to regulate the production of sugary drinks to reduce their negative effect on human health.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to DG, if the government insists on the new \u201csugar tax\u201d, obliging it is inevitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIf the President insists he wants it, we have to oblige him,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has criticised the newly-introduced excise duty of N10\/litre on all non-alcoholic, carbonated and sweetened beverages by the federal government.
