{"id":131270,"date":"2022-01-07T20:13:31","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T19:13:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=131270"},"modified":"2022-01-07T20:35:16","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T19:35:16","slug":"ex-councillor-ordered-to-pay-woman-n4m-for-assaulting-forcing-her-to-walk-naked-in-akwa-ibom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/07\/ex-councillor-ordered-to-pay-woman-n4m-for-assaulting-forcing-her-to-walk-naked-in-akwa-ibom\/","title":{"rendered":"4-years after, ex-councillor ordered to pay woman N4m for assaulting, forcing her to walk naked in Akwa Ibom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former councilor in Akwa Ibom State, Uduak Nseobot, and his wife, Aniedi, have been ordered to pay N4million for assaulting and striping a woman, Iniubong Essien, naked in public.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Edem Akpan of a High Court sitting in Uyo, also ordered that they pay an additional N200,000 to the woman to cover the cost of litigation.<\/p>\n<p>According to SaharaReporters, Nseobot had sometime in November 2018 when he was still in office, abducted the victim in Uyo and drove her to Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of the state, about 27 minutes drive, where he and his wife <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/21\/video-how-power-drunk-lagos-official-slapped-assaulted-73-year-old-medical-doctor-laboratory-manager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">assaulted<\/a> and publicly stripped her.<\/p>\n<p>They had reportedly accused her of stealing their money, which they claimed was \u201csprayed\u201d on them at their wedding ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>The victim had her body painted with charcoal and a rope tied around her waist while she was forced to dance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/15\/rivers-grandmother-suffering-from-dementia-stripped-naked-beaten-over-witchcraft-allegations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">naked<\/a> before some community people.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering judgment in the case, Justice Akpan, while delivering a verdict on Thursday January 6, said what Nseobot and his wife did to the woman was \u201ctotally condemnable\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The judge added that the man\u2019s action was a typical disregard Nigerian politicians have for citizens\u2019 rights. He added that by their own affidavits, the man and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/27\/zambian-man-commits-suicide-after-beating-his-wife-to-death-on-christmas-day\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wife<\/a> \u201cadmitted to committing the atrocities\u201d and that they had no defense for what they did.<\/p>\n<p>A Lagos-based lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, who had filed the fundamental rights enforcement suit on behalf of Ms. Essien, told newsmen that his client had been vindicated by the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the outset, the evidence was very compelling. What the former councillor did was quite outrageous. I think that is about one of the most grievous examples of human rights violations (in Nigeria).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to enforce the judgment.
