{"id":132947,"date":"2022-01-11T13:30:16","date_gmt":"2022-01-11T12:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=132947"},"modified":"2022-01-11T13:30:16","modified_gmt":"2022-01-11T12:30:16","slug":"predator-jailed-for-life-for-raping-five-women-he-met-on-tinder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/11\/predator-jailed-for-life-for-raping-five-women-he-met-on-tinder\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Predator&#8217; jailed for life for raping five women he met on Tinder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A would-be paramedic who raped five women he met on the Tinder dating app has been jailed for life.<\/p>\n<p>Tattooed Tom Rodwell, 31, of Acklam, Middlesbrough subjected his victims to sexual and physical harm, manipulated them, and made them feel worthless, Teesside Crown Court was told.<\/p>\n<p>Passing sentence, Judge Paul Watson QC said the defendant was \u201caddicted to a sense of power\u201d he had over the women, whose lives he had \u201cruined\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The judge told him: \u201cYou are a callous, unfeeling sexual predator whose only concern is for your own gratification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a series of statements, victims told the court how Rodwell, who previously worked for HMRC, the Royal Navy in Scotland at an NHS call centre and who was training to be a paramedic, shattered their confidence and forced them into sexual acts.<\/p>\n<p>He admitted a series of 10 rape offences against his five victims, in a period spanning three years, as well as attempted rape and sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, it emerged that the defendant, who has no previous convictions, faced similar charges in Scotland in 2018 but was acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>Rodwell used the Tinder app to make contact with the women, some of whom were students.<\/p>\n<p>Richard Bennett, prosecuting, told the court: \u201cThe defendant, using social media, would contact a number of single young women and once in contact with them, he would physically and sexually abuse them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the physical and sexual abuse, he would psychologically manipulate them and in some cases make them feel worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bennett said Rodwell had told his first victim he was into \u201crough sex\u201d and the barrister added: \u201cIt would become apparent that the defendant did not realise or seem to care that he needed consent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodwell admitted raping her at least four times.<\/p>\n<p>The first time he met his second victim he told her he wanted to get her pregnant and threw her contraceptive pills in the bin, which she took to be a joke.<\/p>\n<p>He raped her the second time they met, days later sending her a Whatsapp asking when he could \u201crape her again\u201d, Mr. Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p>The third woman said she considered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/17\/court-sentences-40-year-old-man-to-life-imprisonment-for-raping-boy-8-in-uyo\/\">killing<\/a> herself having been raped by Rodwell several times and said he had \u201cgas-lighted\u201d her and made her feel that she needed him.<\/p>\n<p>The fourth woman said Rodwell raped her in a hotel, then repeatedly hit her, but he later claimed he could not remember what happened but said his \u201cex liked it\u201d, Mr. Bennett said.<\/p>\n<p>The final victim told said Rodwell had told her from the outset how he wanted to \u201cown her\u201d and \u201cchoke her\u201d, the court heard.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Turton, defending, said there was no clear explanation for Rodwell\u2019s offending, but drink was involved.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Turton said: \u201cHe is unable to explain to me or to the court why he had these preoccupations and why there were deviant elements in terms of control and violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt appears alcohol played a part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Judge Watson jailed Rodwell for life with a minimum term of 12 years before he can be considered for parole.<\/p>\n<p>Restraining orders were put in place to prevent him from contacting any of the women.<\/p>\n<p>After the sentencing, Detective Constable Rick Sainsbury paid tribute to the women who have now seen him jailed for life.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cRodwell\u2019s offending is despicable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe is a dangerous individual and his selfish and depraved actions have caused lasting harm to his victims and their families.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A would-be paramedic who raped five women he met on the Tinder dating app has been jailed for life.
