{"id":133698,"date":"2022-01-13T05:06:54","date_gmt":"2022-01-13T04:06:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=133698"},"modified":"2022-01-13T05:06:54","modified_gmt":"2022-01-13T04:06:54","slug":"american-arrested-for-supplying-performance-enhancing-drugs-to-okagbare-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/13\/american-arrested-for-supplying-performance-enhancing-drugs-to-okagbare-others\/","title":{"rendered":"American arrested for supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Okagbare, others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An American citizen, Eric Lira, has been arrested for allegedly supplying performance-enhancing drugs to Nigerian sprinter, Blessing Okagbare, and other athletes that competed in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report in NBC News, prosecutors filed a criminal complaint at the Manhattan Federal Court on Wednesday alleging that Lira, a kinesiologist and naturopathic doctor, brought \u201cmisbranded\u201d versions of the drugs to the United States from Central and South America before distributing them to athletes.<\/p>\n<p>The 41-year-old is the first person to be charged under the new U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/06\/23\/anti-doping-rule-olympic-swimming-champion-sun-yang-banned-for-four-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anti-doping<\/a> law governing international sports competitions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office in Manhattan, Lira distributed the drugs, including human growth hormone and erythropoietin, a blood-building hormone, \u201cfor the purpose of corrupting\u201d the 2020 Games.<\/p>\n<p>Lira also is accused of conspiring to violate drug misbranding and adulteration laws.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a criminal complaint does not name Okagbare but includes details suggesting she was among Lira\u00b4s clients.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/16\/fbi-arrests-celebrated-nigerian-medical-doctor-nwaokwu-for-multimillion-dollar-healthcare-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a> Assistant Director, Michael J. Driscoll, had said in a statement, \u201cIt\u00b4s not winning if you take illegal substances \u2013 it&#8217;s cheating.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Okagbare had been provisionally suspended for testing positive for human growth hormone in July 2021, just hours before the former world championships silver medalist was due to run in the semifinals of the women\u00b4s 100 meters at the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>She tested positive for the drug in an out-of-competition test.<\/p>\n<p>Federal authorities searched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/31\/tokyo-olympics-nigerias-blessing-okagbare-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Okagbare<\/a>\u2019s cellphone as she was returning to the United States from Tokyo and found she had frequently communicated with Lira over an encrypted app, according to the complaint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs it safe to take a test this morning?\u201d Okagbare wrote in one message to Lira, according to the complaint. \u201cRemember I took it Wednesday and then yesterday again. I wasn\u00b4t sure so I didn&#8217;t take a test.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In another exchange, Okagbare wrote to Lira that she had just run the 100m in 10.63 seconds. \u201cEric my body feels so good,\u201d she wrote. \u201cWhatever you did is working so well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LIRA encouraged his client, \u201cWhat you did . . . is going to help you for the upcoming events. You are doing your part and you will be ready to dominate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The charges against Lira were brought under the Rodchenkov Act, a law signed in 2020 that prohibits \u201cany person, other than an athlete,\u201d to knowingly influence any \u201cmajor international sports competition\u201d with the use of prohibited substance.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said, \u201cAt a moment that the Olympic Games offered a poignant reminder of international connections in the midst of a global pandemic that had separated communities and countries for over a year, and at a moment that the Games offered thousands of athletes validation after years of training, Eric Lira schemed to debase that moment by peddling illegal drugs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The promise of the Olympic Games is a global message of unification.
