{"id":133747,"date":"2022-01-13T07:10:53","date_gmt":"2022-01-13T06:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=133747"},"modified":"2022-01-13T07:11:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-13T06:11:18","slug":"amnesty-twitter-ban-was-illegal-and-attack-on-right-to-freedom-of-expression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/13\/amnesty-twitter-ban-was-illegal-and-attack-on-right-to-freedom-of-expression\/","title":{"rendered":"Amnesty: Twitter ban was illegal and attack on right to freedom of expression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Amnesty international, a global right group has hailed the lifting of the ban placed on social media platform, Twitter by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>The lifting of the ban after 222 days was announced in a press statement on Wednesday signed by the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency and Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement, Kashifu Abdullahi.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the development, Amnesty disclosed that\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/09\/twitter-ban-court-dismisses-suit-against-fg-fines-serap-n100000\/\">Twitter ban<\/a> was illegal in the first place and an attack on the right to freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmnesty International welcomes the lifting of Twitter ban by Nigerian authorities, after 7\u2013months of depriving Nigerians from exercising their right to freedom of expression on a social media platform that facilitates dialogue and empowers everyone to communicate, hold useful debates and conversations, and demand accountability from the Nigerian authorities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Twitter ban was illegal \u2014 in the first place \u2014 and an attack on the right to freedom of expression, including online, access to information and media freedom.
