{"id":134289,"date":"2022-01-14T05:30:34","date_gmt":"2022-01-14T04:30:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=134289"},"modified":"2022-01-14T05:34:00","modified_gmt":"2022-01-14T04:34:00","slug":"who-recommends-two-new-drugs-for-treatment-of-covid-19-patients","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/14\/who-recommends-two-new-drugs-for-treatment-of-covid-19-patients\/","title":{"rendered":"WHO recommends two new drugs for treatment of COVID-19 patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended two new drugs namely baricitinib and sotrovimab for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released on Thursday by the World Health Organisation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the global health body,<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0the recommendation is based on new evidence from seven trials involving over 4,000 patients with severe, non-severe, and critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/13\/covid-19-nigeria-records-432-fresh-infections-in-14-states-fct\/\">COVID-19<\/a> infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the WHO,<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0baricitinib \u2014 also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis \u2014 is strongly recommended for patients with severe or critical COVID-19 in combination with corticosteroids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The global health body said the \u201cstrong recommendation\u201d is based on moderate certainty evidence that it improves survival and reduces the need for ventilation, with no observed increase in adverse effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe WHO experts note that baricitinib has similar effects to other arthritis drugs called interleukin-6 (IL-6) inhibitors so, when both are available, they suggest choosing one based on cost, availability, and clinician experience. It is not recommended to use both drugs at the same time,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The WHO made a \u201cconditional recommendation\u201d for the use of sotrovimab, a monoclonal antibody (made by cloning a unique white blood cell), in patients with non-severe COVID-19, but only in those at highest risk of hospitalisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cA similar recommendation has been made by WHO for another monoclonal antibody drug (casirivimab-imdevimab),\u201d the statement added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe experts also note that there were insufficient data to recommend one monoclonal antibody treatment over another \u2013 and they acknowledge that their effectiveness against new variants like omicron is still uncertain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs such, they say guidelines for monoclonal antibodies will be updated when additional data become<\/span> available.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has recommended two new drugs namely baricitinib and sotrovimab for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
