{"id":136868,"date":"2022-01-19T15:14:20","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T14:14:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=136868"},"modified":"2022-01-19T15:14:20","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T14:14:20","slug":"lagos-businessman-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment-for-defiling-impregnating-14-year-old-in-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/19\/lagos-businessman-sentenced-to-life-imprisonment-for-defiling-impregnating-14-year-old-in-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos businessman sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling, impregnating 14-year-old in-law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ofure Siakpere, a 38-year-old businessman, was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday by an Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court for defiling and impregnating his 14-year-old in-law (name withheld).<\/p>\n<p>According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Justice Abiola Soladoye jailed Siakpere after finding him guilty of defilement in violation of Section 137 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In his decision, Soladoye stated that the prosecution had proven every element of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/07\/08\/ondo-court-jails-widow-for-killing-ailing-husband\/\">defilement offense<\/a>. The prosecution witnesses, she said, were &#8220;compelling and convincing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said, \u201cThis is contrary to that of the defence which was rather shallow and full of fallacy. The evidence of the defence witnesses were merely self-serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge admonished parents to stop sending their children to stay with relatives and advised that they should plan their families by giving birth to the number of children they can afford.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant maltreated the victim (his wife\u2019s niece) by defiling her. The conduct of this so-called in-law is hurtful and demeaning. Where is the defendant\u2019s humanity and moral compass?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is a reflection of sexual lawlessness that occurs within the family circle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant must be duly sanctioned in the hope that this will serve as a deterrent to others to not toe the line of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defendant Ofure Siakpere, is hereby sentenced to life imprisonment with no option of fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis name shall also be registered in the Sex Offenders Register as maintained by the Lagos State Government,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Lead State Prosecutor, Funke Adegoke, Siakpere committed the offence on or about March 2018 at his residence located at No. 10, Salaudeen Imam Street, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The convict was 35 years old when the offence was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/23\/man-hangs-himself-at-in-laws-house-after-discovering-wife-was-cheating-on-him\/\">committed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, two witnesses; the survivor and a medical doctor, Dr Aniekan Makanjuola, from Women at Risk International Foundation testified on behalf of the prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>The survivor in her evidence said that she was overpowered and defiled on at least 15 occasions by the convict while living with him and his wife who was her aunt.<\/p>\n<p>She said that anytime she resisted his advances, he beats her up. The survivor said that she became pregnant as a result of the abuse. At the time of her testimony in court, she had been delivered of a baby.<\/p>\n<p>The convict and his wife, Adebimpe Siakpere testified for the defence.
