{"id":136873,"date":"2022-01-19T15:20:32","date_gmt":"2022-01-19T14:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=136873"},"modified":"2022-01-19T15:20:32","modified_gmt":"2022-01-19T14:20:32","slug":"fix-moribund-refineries-before-removing-subsidy-on-petrol-tuc-tells-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/19\/fix-moribund-refineries-before-removing-subsidy-on-petrol-tuc-tells-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix moribund refineries before removing subsidy on petrol, TUC tells FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on the federal government to fix the country&#8217;s moribund refineries before ending petrol subsidy payments.<\/p>\n<p>The union also accused the government of wasting $9.5 billion on turnaround maintenance of the country\u2019s refineries in the past 10 years.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Tuesday by TUC president, Quadri Olaleye<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> during the inauguration of the newly elected national executive committee of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/13\/ipman-confirms-availability-of-kerosene\/\">(IPMAN)<\/a> in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that the federal executive council (FEC) in March 2021 approved the sum of $1.5 billion for the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"caps\">The government had said it will engage qualified companies to operate and maintain three state-owned oil refineries &#8211; Port-Harcourt\u00a0Refining Company (PHRC), Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), and Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC).<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Olaleye said corruption and inefficiency in government are responsible for the energy crisis in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEven with Nigeria\u2019s status of being one of the largest oil-producing countries, the energy crises that have befallen us as a nation are well known, and this is solely due to the incompetence and corruption of the government,\u201d Olaleye said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe fuel subsidy and the proposed hike in fuel price is a rather prominent and recurring one. Nigeria is the only OPEC member country that imports more than 90 to 95 percent of refined petroleum products for consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNigeria has a total of five refineries in the country of which four are owned and managed by the government, and one by NDPR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt might interest you to know that none of the government-owned refineries is functioning, yet in the past 10 years alone, the government has wasted about $9.5 billion for turnaround maintenance of the moribund refineries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Olaleye said the union was not against the removal of the fuel subsidy if it would yield positive results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cRather, we are inquisitive as to what the government has to offer following the removal,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHow can we trust the government and be certain that they will actually remove it this time around, because, in the past, they have claimed to remove the so-called \u2018subsidy\u2019, so how can what has been removed be removed again?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWill there be construction and utilisation of modular refineries as the government has previously promised and failed to deliver? Will there be rehabilitation of existing moribund refineries?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhat will the government do to put an end to dependence on imported fuel? It is imperative to note these questions because we need adequate answers on what the government has to offer as failed promises from the government have become the order of the day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The TUC boss said that if the subsidy was eventually removed, the government should focus on expenditures that were beneficial to the economy rather than projects that generate losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He urged the federal government to fix the country\u2019s moribund refineries before putting an end to petrol subsidy payments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere should be the establishment of modular refineries and construction of functioning refineries in the country,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has called on the federal government to fix the country&#8217;s moribund refineries before ending petrol subsidy payments.
