{"id":139623,"date":"2022-01-25T15:18:10","date_gmt":"2022-01-25T14:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=139623"},"modified":"2022-01-25T15:18:10","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T14:18:10","slug":"fix-our-refineries-so-petrol-will-be-cheaper-nlc-tells-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/25\/fix-our-refineries-so-petrol-will-be-cheaper-nlc-tells-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix our refineries so petrol will be cheaper, NLC tells FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the federal government should focus on making refineries work.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Tuesday by the deputy president of NLC, Joe Ajaero while speaking on the fuel subsidy controversy<span class=\"acssf62a8\"> during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caps\">Recall that the federal government had on Monday postponed the planned petrol subsidy removal till further notice due to \u201chigh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/17\/nigerias-inflation-rate-rises-to-15-63\/\">inflation<\/a> and economic hardship\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The government had initially planned to stop subsidy payments on petroleum products from July this year.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">In reaction, the NLC deputy president: \u201cWe want the government to refine here. We have been getting stories from the government that they will fix refineries. As at last year, they made provision of about $1.5 billion for the maintenance of refineries but they did not make it work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cIn the Nigerian context, the issue of subsidy is increasing the price of fuel. The export of crude oil for refineries has continually devalued our currency by refining outside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">He said instead of exporting crude oil to be refined in other countries, thereby increasing revenue generation, the government should settle for alternatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cWe worsen the effect when we take crude oil outside for refining and it affects about 3,000 people from getting employed,\u201d Ajaero said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cWe should legalise illegal refineries. We have had meetings upon meetings but we keep getting promises and we haven\u2019t seen anything. We have to localise refining our petrol so that petrol will be cheaper.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Ajaero, however, added that after the rally, the NLC would wait until June 2022 before its next move.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has stated that the federal government should focus on making refineries work.
