{"id":141082,"date":"2022-01-28T18:44:42","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T17:44:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=141082"},"modified":"2022-01-28T18:56:18","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T17:56:18","slug":"ponzi-scheme-operators-arrested-for-attempting-to-defraud-gombe-residents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/28\/ponzi-scheme-operators-arrested-for-attempting-to-defraud-gombe-residents\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ponzi scheme operators&#8217; arrested for attempting to defraud Gombe residents"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six suspects have been arrested by the police over alleged fraudulent activities in Gombe state.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known by the commissioner of police in Gombe state, Ishola Babaita while addressing journalists about the arrest on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Babaita said the suspects \u2014 two Nigerians and four Benin Republic citizens \u2014 were apprehended through the community policing approach of the police.<\/p>\n<p>He said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/24\/ebonyi-police-arrest-two-suspects-over-beheading-of-ebubeagu-operative\/\">suspects<\/a> were arrested on January 8, adding that the\u00a0Benin Republic citizens entered Nigeria illegally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn January 18 at 8:30 pm, the command received information that three hummer buses brought some group of young men numbering about 109,\u201d the commissioner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately, police operatives in synergy with the Department of State Security (DSS) were dispatched to the scene and the people were invited to the DSS facility where they were interrogated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two Nigerians were transferred to the police for discrete investigations and possible prosecution while the four Benineses were handed over to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) which later returned them to the police.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner said the suspect claimed to be in QNET web networking business.<\/p>\n<p>Babaita said documents presented by the suspects showed that they are not employees or agents of QNET.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis means that as independent representatives, they are to be solely responsible for complying with applicable local laws, ethical practices and paying taxes on commissions and assumes all risks related to their IR entrepreneurial activities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner said the 109 youths were recruited by the six suspects to serve as marketers.<\/p>\n<p>He said investigations revealed the suspects were involved in a ponzi scheme to swindle residents.<\/p>\n<p>The commissioner added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Abdullahi Yusuf, one of the suspects, denied being involved in fraudulent activities.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAN, the suspect said he is involved in networking and that he began his firm in Benin Republic before deciding to expand to Gombe state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Six suspects have been arrested by the police over alleged fraudulent activities in Gombe state.
