{"id":1428,"date":"2021-02-24T17:51:31","date_gmt":"2021-02-24T16:51:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=1428"},"modified":"2021-02-24T17:51:31","modified_gmt":"2021-02-24T16:51:31","slug":"plateau-gov-lalong-reveals-why-he-rejected-ruga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/24\/plateau-gov-lalong-reveals-why-he-rejected-ruga\/","title":{"rendered":"Plateau Gov Lalong reveals why he rejected RUGA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong has revealed why he opposed the\u00a0Rural Grazing Area Programme popularly referred to as RUGA.<\/p>\n<p>This revelation was made by the Governor when he appeared on a Channels Television program.<\/p>\n<p>Lalong said RUGA was sneaked in for reasons they did not understand after the National Economic Council had adopted the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP).<\/p>\n<p>Lalong further disclosed that\u00a0while the council which is headed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo saw NLTP as a comprehensive approach to tackling the cattle herder-farmers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/02\/24\/insecurity-avoid-non-essential-travels-to-nigeria-canada-cautions-citizens\/\">conflict<\/a> and associated challenges in Nigeria, RUGA did not have the buy-in of concerned parties and fell short of addressing the concerns of most state governors.<\/p>\n<p>He said;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-transform: initial\">\u201cI was one of the first governors to kick against the RUGA programme when it was introduced.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo start with, the concept was literally sneaked in for reasons we did not understand. For me as Governor of Plateau State, I just heard that they had erected signposts in some sites within some local governments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can you embark on such a project without my knowledge and the buy-in of the people of my state?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had no interest in it because it was far below the NLTP, which was more robust and passed through a series of engagements with critical stakeholders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lalong who further noted that the\u00a0NLTP will go a long way in addressing the farmers-herders crsis, added that\u00a0it will carry along many groups and individuals involved in livestock business and the value chain.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong has revealed why he opposed the\u00a0Rural Grazing Area Programme popularly referred to as RUGA.
