{"id":143489,"date":"2022-02-03T07:02:44","date_gmt":"2022-02-03T06:02:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=143489"},"modified":"2022-02-03T07:06:14","modified_gmt":"2022-02-03T06:06:14","slug":"group-to-npa-private-jetties-operating-illegally-as-container-terminals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/03\/group-to-npa-private-jetties-operating-illegally-as-container-terminals\/","title":{"rendered":"Group to NPA: Private jetties operating illegally as container terminals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the Nigerian Importers Integrity Association (NIIA), Godwin Onyekazi has called on the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and other relevant agencies to halt illegal activities around unregulated private jetties in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Tuesday by the president of the Nigerian Importers Integrity Association (NIIA), Godwin Onyekazi.<\/p>\n<p>According to Onyekazi,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0some private jetties operating on the Kirikiri channel and oil service facilities now engage in handling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/01\/npa-to-customs-auction-overtime-containers-to-decongest-ports\/\">containers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cHundreds of empty containers are loaded from unlicensed jetties on the Kirikiri channel onto big barges which then discharge these containers in neighbouring countries,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is not clear who licensed these barge operators and the jetties if these barges and jetties are registered with all relevant authorities and finally if they are paying the statutory dues to NPA and all other governmental agencies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Onyekazi, only port operators, concessioned by the federal government through NPA, can engage in container handling operations. Loading of empties from any other facility is illegal and should be investigated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe jetties in question are now illegally operating as container terminals,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEmpty containers are loaded from the sub-standard jetty in Kirikiri on barges and sail straight out of Nigeria to the ports of neighbouring countries, especially to Cotonou and Lome ports.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis trend is dangerous, as it poses serious economic and security implications for Nigeria. Who licensed the jetties as container terminals?
