{"id":144199,"date":"2022-02-04T13:46:19","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T12:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=144199"},"modified":"2022-02-04T13:46:19","modified_gmt":"2022-02-04T12:46:19","slug":"dmo-we-have-returned-oversubscribed-2021-sovereign-sukuk-to-investors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/04\/dmo-we-have-returned-oversubscribed-2021-sovereign-sukuk-to-investors\/","title":{"rendered":"DMO: We have returned oversubscribed 2021 sovereign Sukuk to investors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Debt Management Office (DMO) has disclosed that it has returned the oversubscribed portion of the country&#8217;s N250 billion road Sukuk instrument offered in December 2021.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The sovereign Sukuk ended with a subscription level of over N865 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Thursday by the director-general of the DMO,\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Patience Oniha at a presentation ceremony held in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The ceremony was organised to present cheques to beneficiary ministries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In December 2021, the DMO had said road projects in the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0ministry of works and housing, federal capital territory administration and the ministry of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/29\/ozekhome-disagrees-with-ex-president-obasanjo-over-oil-belongs-to-nigeria-not-niger-delta-statement\/\">Niger Delta<\/a> affairs will take priority in the 10-year N250 billion road Sukuk instrument<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Oniha, the 2021 Sukuk could not accommodate the oversubscription as it was part of the federal government\u2019s borrowing plan, which was available in the budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBased on all the investor engagements we have done, and the popularity of the Sukuk product, we decided to go for N250 billion, and we got N865 billion,\u201d NAN quoted Oniha as saying.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSukuk is part of domestic borrowing in the budget; it is not an extra borrowing, so we took only the N250 billion that was available in the budget and returned the rest to investors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBut we made sure that each investor who bid got something.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Oniha said the Sukuk product had gained investors\u2019 confidence as a viable instrument for financing road infrastructure in Nigeria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen we raised the money, it goes to the contractors after they have done the job,\u201d the DG said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is one way to energise each party and to tell the contractors that we are in business and that when they do their jobs, their monies are ready.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cOne fundamental achievement is the incremental growth that has been achieved with the Sukuk. We started with N100 billion in 2017, N100 billion in 2018, N162 billion in 2020 and N250 billion in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe incremental growth and oversubscription in 2021 are a demonstration of confidence; it means that investors believe in the product.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget and national planning, said the N250 billion Sukuk fund would be released as part of the capital expenditure in the 2021 budget, which had been extended to March 31.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ahmed assured that the federal government would continue to prioritise spending on infrastructure to keep up the growth momentum of the gross domestic product (GDP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs you may be aware, the GDP is projected to grow by 4.2 per cent in 2022.
