{"id":144917,"date":"2022-02-06T11:01:51","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T10:01:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=144917"},"modified":"2022-02-06T11:03:10","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T10:03:10","slug":"saraki-why-i-suffered-persecution-as-senate-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/06\/saraki-why-i-suffered-persecution-as-senate-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Saraki: Why I suffered persecution as senate president"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s senate president, Bukola Saraki has stated that he suffered &#8220;persecution&#8221; when he was senate president because he stood for the independence of the national assembly.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known by the former senate president during a\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/spaces\/1vAxRkzdWRgKl?s=20&amp;t=-zPN_ngrzYlD-J6-NL-3rQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Twitter space<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0discussion titled #2023Elections, which was hosted by Rinu Oduala, one of the organisers of the #EndSARS protest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Saraki, a former governor of Kwara state, was the senate president of the eighth national assembly from 2015 to 2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During the online conversation, participants asked the speakers, including Saraki, questions on the 2023 general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/04\/osun-2022-pdp-cannot-threaten-my-re-election-oyetola-boasts\/\">election<\/a> and previous political engagements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Aisha Yesufu, activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG), accused the eighth national assembly of being the \u201cworst in Nigeria\u2019s history\u201d, adding that the current national assembly gave \u201cfailure another meaning\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yesufu also added that the eighth assembly under Saraki paid lip service to the #OpenNASS, a campaign on openness, transparency and accountability of the national assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Responding to the activist\u2019s comment, Saraki said he \u201ctotally disagreed\u201d that the eighth national assembly is the \u201cworst in history\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the national assembly under him did not curry favour from the executive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The former Kwara governor said the struggle he faced while he was the senate president was because he stood for the independence of the national assembly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On the #OpenNASS campaign, the former senate president said the national assembly under him made it\u2019s budget a public document.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen she talked about #OpenNASS, you can go and check the records before the eighth national assembly, there was no time before then that the budget of the national assembly was a public document,\u201d Saraki said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe made it public for the first time in the history of the national assembly, that is one of our achievements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNot only that, The budget process for the first time had public hearings, it has never happened in the history of this country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIn the history of the national assembly, loans that were being requested by governors were being asked questions. We say \u2018tell us what these specific loans are for\u2019. It has never happened, it is not happening now. Is it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWhen you talked about curry favour. One of the things we went through is because we were not curried.
