{"id":145048,"date":"2022-02-06T19:10:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T18:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=145048"},"modified":"2022-02-06T19:10:00","modified_gmt":"2022-02-06T18:10:00","slug":"garba-shehu-blasts-david-piling-of-london-financial-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/06\/garba-shehu-blasts-david-piling-of-london-financial-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Garba Shehu blasts David Piling of London Financial Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s spokesperson, Garba Shehu has sent a stinging rebuke to the Financial Times of London, following an article on the Buhari administration.<\/p>\n<p>The article was titled \u201cWhat is Nigeria\u2019s Government For,\u201d and authored by David Piling, in the newspaper\u2019s edition of 31 January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Malam Garba in a statement on Sunday condemned the writer for describing the Nigerian government as\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/28\/buhari-has-done-something-worse-to-bandits-than-declaring-them-terrorists-garba-shehu\/\">government<\/a> sleepwalking into disaster\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pilling in the article had claimed that President \u201cBuhari has overseen two terms of economic slump, rising debt and a calamitous increase in kidnapping and banditry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe one thing you might have thought a former general could control. As said of India, Nigeria grows at night, while the government sleeps which is hardly surprising that some libertarian tech entrepreneurs want the government to withdraw and leave the private sector in charge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reacting, however, Shehu criticised the publication for leaving out the security gains by the government, adding that the Boko Haram terrorists have no territory at the moment under President Muhammadu Buhari-led government.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read in part:\u201d We wish to correct the wrong perceptions contained in the article \u201cWhat is Nigeria\u2019s Government For,\u201d by David Pilling, Financial Times (UK), January 31, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe caricature of a government sleepwalking into disaster (What is Nigeria\u2019s government for? January 31, 2022) was predictable from a correspondent, who jets briefly in and out of Nigeria on the same British Airways flight he so criticizes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe highlights rising banditry in Nigeria as proof of such slumber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat he leaves out are the security gains made over two Presidential terms. The terror organisation Boko Haram used to administer an area the size of Belgium at the inauguration; now, they control no territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d The first comprehensive plan to deal with decades-old clashes between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers \u2013 experienced across the width of the Sahel \u2013 has been introduced: pilot ranches are reducing the competition for water and land that drove past tensions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dBanditry grew out of such clashes. Criminal gangs took advantage of the instability, flush with guns that flooded the region following the Western-triggered implosion of Libya.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe situation is grave.
