{"id":145959,"date":"2022-02-08T15:02:54","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T14:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=145959"},"modified":"2022-02-08T15:02:54","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T14:02:54","slug":"bidens-adviser-lander-resigns-after-complaints-he-bullied-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/08\/bidens-adviser-lander-resigns-after-complaints-he-bullied-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden&#8217;s adviser Lander resigns after complaints he bullied staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A top science adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden resigned on Monday after allegations came to light that he had bullied and demeaned staffers.<\/p>\n<p>Eric Lander, who serves as director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, was the focus of an internal review after subordinates complained about his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/15\/us-troops-to-finally-leave-afghanistan-20-years-after-world-trade-center-bombing-biden-reveals\/\">treatment<\/a> of them.<\/p>\n<p>The review was first reported by Politico earlier on Monday and confirmed by White House press secretary Jen Psaki.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am devastated that I caused hurt to past and present colleagues by the way in which I have spoken to them,\u201d Lander said in the resignation letter submitted to Biden.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that he sought to push himself and colleagues by at times \u201cchallenging and criticizing,\u201d he acknowledged that \u201cthings I said, and the way I said them, crossed the line at times into being disrespectful and demeaning.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The allegations against Lander struck a nerve given Biden came into office pledging to take a hard line on any disrespect among members of his administration and turn the page from the derisive rhetoric of his predecessor Donald Trump.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re ever working with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect, talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot \u2026 no ifs, ands or buts,\u201d Biden told political appointees during a swearing-in ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody is entitled to be treated with decency and dignity,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the allegations against Lander earlier on Monday, Psaki condemned Lander\u2019s behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn addition to the full, thorough investigation, it was conveyed through meetings to senior White House officials directly that his behaviour was inappropriate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing about his behaviour is acceptable to anyone here \u2013 not at all,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday evening, Psaki put out a statement saying Biden had accepted Lander\u2019s resignation letter \u201cwith gratitude for his work,\u201d citing his role in fighting cancer, climate change and the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Lander said his resignation should be effective no later than Feb. 18.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A top science adviser to U.S. President Joe Biden resigned on Monday after allegations came to light that he had bullied and demeaned staffers.
