{"id":146476,"date":"2022-02-09T13:47:58","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T12:47:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=146476"},"modified":"2022-02-09T13:48:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T12:48:32","slug":"mtn-customers-must-provide-virtual-nin-for-sim-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/09\/mtn-customers-must-provide-virtual-nin-for-sim-services\/","title":{"rendered":"MTN: Customers must provide virtual NIN for SIM services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MTN Nigeria has informed its customers that they will now be\u00a0required to provide their Virtual NIN or the improved NIN slip for all SIM related services.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the telecommunication company in a vNIN update flier.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company SIM registration, replacement, mobile number portability, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/08\/lagos-catholic-priest-suspended-for-banning-igbo-songs-in-his-parish\/\">NIN<\/a> linking, and 4G upgrade can only be done with vNIN or the improved NIN slip.<\/p>\n<p>It said, \u201cvNIN is a tokenised version of a person\u2019s actual NIN, it is a 16-digit alphanumeric (ABCXYZ1249872DK\u2026) NIN that customers will be required to generate either via NIMC mobile App, via the improved NIN slip with QR code for scanning using the NIMC mobile app or USSD channel for any SIM related services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virtual NIN tokens are merchant-specific and expire after a set period of time (usually 72 hours). This means that a token generated for company MTN cannot be used or verified by company Airtel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to MTN, it is adopting vNIN because the Federal Government introduced it as a means to protect citizens\u2019 data privacy as another party verifying the number cannot retain or use it in a way that puts the individual\u2019s data privacy at risk.<\/p>\n<p>It added that vNIN is only applicable to citizens with the original 11 digit NIN.
