{"id":146526,"date":"2022-02-09T16:13:32","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:13:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=146526"},"modified":"2022-02-09T16:13:32","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T15:13:32","slug":"unimed-doctors-down-tools-over-assault-on-medical-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/09\/unimed-doctors-down-tools-over-assault-on-medical-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"UNIMED doctors down tools over assault on medical officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Resident doctors at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo State, have embarked on a two-day warning strike to protest an assault on a medical officer.<\/p>\n<p>A relative of an aged patient was said to have assaulted the medical officer on Tuesday inflicting injuries on him.<\/p>\n<p>The victim, identified simply as Dr Sayo, works at the Accident and Emergency Department of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that the assailant was dissatisfied with the manner the said medical officer handled the patient, resulting in an altercation between them.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said it took the intervention of men of the Amotekun Corps before the doctor \u201cwas rescued\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/27\/only-infected-persons-doctors-can-disclose-covid-19-status-in-aso-villa-presidency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doctors<\/a> on Wednesday carried placards to protest the assault, demanding the management\u2019s urgent treatment of the affected doctor.<\/p>\n<p>They also staged peaceful protests in Ondo and Akure centres of the hospital simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>They called on the state government to provide adequate security in the hospital premises to prevent a repeat of the incident.<\/p>\n<p>The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, John Matthew, said \u201cthe attack was uncalled for\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is sad that we have found ourselves in this precarious situation. Over 100 staff have left the hospital, thereby creating a burden for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe implore the state government to employ more doctors to address the problem.
