{"id":146791,"date":"2022-02-10T08:47:03","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T07:47:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=146791"},"modified":"2022-02-10T08:47:03","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T07:47:03","slug":"imf-backs-nigeria-others-over-use-of-digital-money","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/10\/imf-backs-nigeria-others-over-use-of-digital-money\/","title":{"rendered":"IMF backs Nigeria, others over use of digital money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The International Monetary Fund, IMF, has said there is no universal case for central-bank digital currencies, CBDC.<\/p>\n<p>Taking this position yesterday, the IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, urged policy makers to carefully weigh trade-offs as financial innovation enters a new phase with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/10\/ten-nigerian-nationals-arrested-evicted-from-building-they-allegedly-hijacked-in-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigeria<\/a> and Bahamas being pioneers.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg quoted Georgieva as saying, \u201cSo-called CBDCs could boost financial inclusion in some countries, while providing a secure backup for payment systems in others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She, however, cautioned that their design must also take financial-stability and privacy considerations into account to avoid a potential legislative \u201cdeal breaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Bloomberg, she stated: \u201cPolicy makers will need to resolve many open questions, technical obstacles, and policy trade-offs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf CBDCs are designed prudently, they can potentially offer more resilience, more safety, greater availability, and lower costs than private forms of digital money\u201d such as \u201cunbacked crypto assets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The remarks come alongside the publication of an IMF report on digital currencies, which is being considered by about 100 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Pioneers like the Bahamas and Nigeria have already started allowing the public to use CBDCs, while China is expanding an experiment that already includes more than a hundred million users.<\/p>\n<p>One common strand, she said, is central banks\u2019 commitment to minimizing the impact of CBDCs on the financial system. Active projects studied by her staff \u2014 in the Bahamas, China, and the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union \u2014 involve CBDCs that aren\u2019t interest-bearing, making them less attractive for savings than traditional bank deposits.
