{"id":147223,"date":"2022-02-11T07:52:17","date_gmt":"2022-02-11T06:52:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=147223"},"modified":"2022-02-11T07:55:49","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T06:55:49","slug":"telcos-speaks-on-nin-verification-says-nimc-alternative-platform-very-slow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/11\/telcos-speaks-on-nin-verification-says-nimc-alternative-platform-very-slow\/","title":{"rendered":"Telcos speaks on NIN verification, says NIMC alternative platform very slow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has stated that its tokenisation platform for verification of national identification number (NIN) is working &#8220;perfectly fine&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The development was confirmed by NIMC head of corporate communications,\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kayode Adegoke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The NIN tokenisation, better known as virtual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/09\/mtn-customers-must-provide-virtual-nin-for-sim-services\/\">NIN<\/a> (vNIN), is an alternative for citizens to use when digitally verifying their identity with an agent or enterprise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that over the weekend, the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> commission had announced that its NIN verification service (NVS) was temporarily unavailable due to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0mai<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ntenance by one of its network service providers<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The technical difficulty has affected telecommunication companies, banks, and government agencies such as the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), who rely on the service to verify the NIN of their customers before attending to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Adegoke, the verification process has been made easy with tokenisation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He explained that the virtual NIN can be generated via the NIMC mobile app.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that people without digital mobile devices and those who have lost their SIM can also generate a virtual NIN via USSD code.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt (tokenisation) is working perfectly fine now. We have consistently offered top-notch identity services to Nigerians and legal residents, and we will continue to do so,\u201d Adegoke said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, head of operations, <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) on Thursday said<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the tokenisation system for verifying subscribers had been very slow, and fraught with challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt\u2019s a slow process. There are some challenges. Some areas, it will work and in some, it doesn\u2019t. The number of verification that\u2019s supposed to be done is not what we are achieving,\u201d Awonuga said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Galaxy Backbone, the government agency which provides ICT services for NIMC, had assured that it was working hard to resolve the portal breakdown.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe management of Galaxy Backbone Limited (GBB) regrets the temporary outage of some of its services and the inconvenience being experienced by some of its customers across the country,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAcross the organisation, the highest priority classification has been assigned, and all hands are on deck to ensure resolution is achieved within the shortest possible time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAt the time of this press statement, GBB has put together a highly-skilled technical team of experienced Engineers and Applications experts to not just solve this current issue but put in place all the necessary structures to ensure that such an incident never occurs again in the future.
