{"id":149569,"date":"2022-02-16T14:48:08","date_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:48:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=149569"},"modified":"2022-02-16T14:48:08","modified_gmt":"2022-02-16T13:48:08","slug":"experts-to-fg-seek-debt-moratorium-to-reduce-debt-profile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/16\/experts-to-fg-seek-debt-moratorium-to-reduce-debt-profile\/","title":{"rendered":"Experts to FG: Seek debt moratorium to reduce debt profile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Economic experts have called on the\u00a0Federal Government to seek a debt moratorium and reduce the cost of governance to reduce funds expended on debt servicing.<\/p>\n<p>This was made known on Tuesday by the economic experts in seperate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The Head of Department of Economics, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Prof. Sherifdeen Tella, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, said the Federal Government should demand a debt moratorium from our development partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsking for a moratorium is the best because it will enable the government to suspend payment for now and re-strategise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government cannot continue to service its rising <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/09\/27\/nigerias-n35trn-debt-profile-is-unsustainable-for-economy-neca\/\">debt profile<\/a> at the expense of meeting the competing needs of the people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that requesting debt a moratorium was vital because it would ensure government plans and invests in the productive sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Tella added that the Federal Government should desist from borrowing and creatively look inwards the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe authorities should charge the ministries, departments and agencies of the government to be innovative in generating funds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cParticularly, the money-spinning ones, to block all leakages and automate their operations so as to raise funds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>A former Executive Secretary, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, Dr Uju Ogubunka, said that spending huge percentages on debt servicing was unbelievable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpending huge sums on debt servicing will put unnecessary pressure on government revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis simply means that the government revenue position is quite critical and providing public goods might be negated,\u201d Ogubunka said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Federal Government should reduce the cost of governance to curb cost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCutting down the high cost of public officeholders is crucial to reducing the paraphernalia of their office.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect that by now the Federal Government ought to have implemented the Steve Oronsaye report so as to reduce cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Federal Government could enhance its earnings by total removal of petroleum subsidy.<\/p>\n<p>The International Monetary Fund has said the Federal Government could spend as much as 92.6 per cent of its revenue on debt servicing this year.<\/p>\n<p>It also estimated last year\u2019s debt servicing-to-revenue ratio at 85.5 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>As of the end of September 2021, the debt-servicing-to-revenue ratio stood at 76 per cent, implying that 76k out of every N1 earned by the government was spent on payment of interest on debts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Economic experts have called on the\u00a0Federal Government to seek a debt moratorium and reduce the cost of governance to reduce funds expended on debt servicing.
