{"id":150797,"date":"2022-02-19T01:58:53","date_gmt":"2022-02-19T00:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=150797"},"modified":"2022-02-19T01:58:53","modified_gmt":"2022-02-19T00:58:53","slug":"india-court-sentences-38-to-death-over-2008-blasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/19\/india-court-sentences-38-to-death-over-2008-blasts\/","title":{"rendered":"India court sentences 38 to death over 2008 blasts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-eight people have been sentenced to death for their role in a series of bomb blasts that killed 57 people and injured hundreds in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>The bombings took place in Ahmedabad, the commercial capital of the Western state of Gujarat in India.<\/p>\n<p>The court sitting on Friday, February 18 in Ahmedabad also sentenced 11 other convicts to life in prison.<\/p>\n<p>On 26 July 2008, around 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/28\/boko-haram-bombs-maiduguri-electricity-towers-tcn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bombs<\/a> exploded within an hour across residential areas, market places, public transport and hospitals in Ahmedabad. Several unexploded bombs were also found.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian Mujahideen a militant group &#8211; had claimed responsibility for the attacks in an email sent to some media outlets.<\/p>\n<p>Seventy-eight people had faced trial &#8211; one of the accused, Ayaz Saiyed, later helped investigating agencies.<\/p>\n<p>The remaining 28 have been acquitted.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian government declared the group a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/17\/terrorists-amputate-2-locals-kidnap-22-injure-4-in-kaduna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">terrorist<\/a> organisation and banned it in 2010 after it was accused of an attack on a German bakery in which killed 17 people.<\/p>\n<p>The Judge AR Patel also ordered to give compensation of 100,000 rupees (\u00a3982; $1,337) each to families of the victim<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thirty-eight people have been sentenced to death for their role in a series of bomb blasts that killed 57 people and injured hundreds in 2008.
