{"id":152058,"date":"2022-02-22T07:33:21","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T06:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=152058"},"modified":"2022-02-22T07:36:52","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T06:36:52","slug":"ncdc-records-470-suspected-cholera-cases-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/22\/ncdc-records-470-suspected-cholera-cases-in-january\/","title":{"rendered":"NCDC records 470 suspected cholera cases in January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that 470 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in the country in 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">According to the agency\u2019s cholera situation report for January 3 to January 30, the cases were recorded in 10 states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They include Abia, Adamawa, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Borno,\u00a0Cross River, Kwara, Lagos, Taraba and Zamfara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The NCDC, in its report, also said nine out of the suspected cases have died so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The agency said in week four, the last reporting week for January, 50 suspected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/12\/01\/ncdc-records-53-new-suspected-cholera-cases\/\">cholera cases<\/a> were recorded with two deaths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThere was\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">49% decrease in the number of new suspected cases\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">in week 03 (98) compared with week 04 (50),\u201d the report reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTaraba state with 35 account for 70% of 50 suspected cases reported in week 04.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cDuring the reporting week, 7 Cholera Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) was conducted. RDT conducted\u00a0<\/span>was from Taraba (6) and Bayelsa (1).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOf this, a total of 3 (43%) were positive. 1 stool culture was conducted. Stool culture conducted was from Bayelsa (1). Of this, none (0%) was positive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOf the cases reported, there was 2 deaths from one state reporting with a weekly case fatality ratio (CFR) of 4.0%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOf the suspected cases since the beginning of the year,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">age group &lt;5 years\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">is the most affected age group for male and female.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">Of all suspected cases,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s2\">45% are males and 55% are females.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThree states \u2013 Taraba (201 cases), Borno (88 cases) and Adamawa (56 cases) account for 73% of all cumulative cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cTen LGAs across five states \u2013 Borno (3), Adamawa (2), Taraba (1), Bayelsa (1) and Kwara (1) reported more than 10 cases each this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNational Multi-sectoral Cholera TWG continues to monitor response across states.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has disclosed that 470 suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in the country in 2022.
