{"id":152257,"date":"2022-02-22T11:22:56","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T10:22:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=152257"},"modified":"2022-02-22T11:22:56","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T10:22:56","slug":"rochas-okorochas-absence-stalls-arraignment-on-n2-9bn-corruption-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/22\/rochas-okorochas-absence-stalls-arraignment-on-n2-9bn-corruption-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Rochas Okorocha\u2019s absence stalls arraignment on N2.9bn corruption charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The planned arraignment of former Imo State Governor, Anayo Rochas Okorocha, on Tuesday, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, on N2.9bn corruption was stalled.<\/p>\n<p>Okorocha, currently a Senator representing Imo West in the Senate, was absent in court and was also not represented by any legal practitioner.<\/p>\n<p>The development stalled the arraignment.<\/p>\n<p>However, six other defendants billed to be arraigned along with him on 17-count corruption charges were in court, along with their lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>When the matter was mentioned on Tuesday, counsel to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/21\/efcc-arrests-31-suspected-internet-fraudsters-in-benin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFCC<\/a>, Mr Cosmos Ugwu told Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo that the former Imo State Governor had been evading service of the criminal charges on him as required by law.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the retinue of security operatives surrounding the Senator have made it impossible for Okorocha to be served in person by court officials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy, Lord, the business of today is ordinarily for arraignment but it\u2019s regrettable that all efforts on our part to serve the first defendant, Rochas Okorocha have proved abortive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe security around him has not been helpful and I wish to apply for an adjournment to enable us serve him and then, arraign him,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Other defendants in the charge did not object to the request for adjournment.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ekwo subsequently fixed March 28 to enable the EFCC serve him with the charge and to take his plea.<\/p>\n<p>According to the EFCC, the former Imo governor allegedly conspired with others, including a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and five companies, to steal N2.9 billion public funds.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from Okorocha, other defendants are Anyim Nyerere Chinenye, Naphtali International Limited, Perfect Finish Multi Projects Limited, Consolid Projects Consulting Limited, Pramif International Limited, and Legend World Concepts Limited.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2021, the EFCC arrested the former governor and he was grilled for two days over issues bothering on alleged corruption, before he was admitted to administrative bail.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The planned arraignment of former Imo State Governor, Anayo Rochas Okorocha, on Tuesday, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, on N2.9bn corruption was stalled.
