{"id":152680,"date":"2022-02-23T08:19:53","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T07:19:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=152680"},"modified":"2022-02-23T08:19:53","modified_gmt":"2022-02-23T07:19:53","slug":"nigeria-is-committed-to-gas-exploration-utilisation-fg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/23\/nigeria-is-committed-to-gas-exploration-utilisation-fg\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria is committed to gas exploration, utilisation &#8211; FG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has disclosed that it will invest and focus on natural gas exploration to achieve accelerated growth in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Tuesday by <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">President Muhammadu Buhari, represented by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Timipre_Sylva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Timipre Sylva<\/strong><\/a>, minister of state for petroleum resources at the 6th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit in Doha, Qatar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Horatius Egua, the senior adviser to the minister on media and communications, released a statement to that effect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) was an indication of the government\u2019s commitment to deepening natural gas utilisation by providing required governance, regulatory<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and fiscal framework.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said Nigeria was committed to the sustainable growth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/03\/2023-governance-not-for-idle-bloggers-apc-mocks-shehu-sani\/\">natural gas<\/a> exploitation and utilisation, both for domestic use and export \u2014 via LNG and pipeline gas to sub-regional African countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Buhari, various initiatives have been set up to enhance the performance of Nigeria\u2019s oil and gas sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cNGEP is designed to provide framework and policy support to extend the gas supply and utilisation in power generation, gas-based industries and in emerging niche gas sectors,\u201d NAN quoted Buhari as saying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSuch are gas in transportation, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for cooking and remote virtual gas supply using trucks to convey LNG and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to industries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The other initiatives, he said, are the Ajaokuta-Abuja-Kano gas pipeline, which aims to support five billion cubic feet per day of domestic gas utilisation and five-gigawatt power generation in the near term.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe expanding of the current LNG production capacity to about 30 million tons per annum at Bonny with the ongoing N-LNG Train seven project and the declaration of 2021-2030 as the Decade of Gas towards a gas-powered economy,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis would not only lower Nigeria\u2019s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions but also reduce the country\u2019s import bills.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Buhari noted that with natural gas projected to be the leading fossil fuel in the energy transition, the GECF, given its member countries\u2019 vast experience, was well-positioned to provide a credible platform for promoting natural gas as a sustainable fuel for an effective energy transition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe, therefore, need to continue to assess the gas and energy market dynamics both in the short, medium, and long-term time frame to take market opportunities and collectively address the challenges,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To achieve these objectives, he stressed the need to work together to make modern energy sources such as natural gas available and affordable to all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Buhari restated Nigeria\u2019s commitment to the Conference of Parties (COP2 declaration towards zero carbon emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The federal government has disclosed that it will invest and focus on natural gas exploration to achieve accelerated growth in the industry.
