{"id":152847,"date":"2022-02-23T16:20:23","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T15:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=152847"},"modified":"2022-02-23T16:20:23","modified_gmt":"2022-02-23T15:20:23","slug":"covid-omicron-sub-variant-not-more-severe-than-original-says-who","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/23\/covid-omicron-sub-variant-not-more-severe-than-original-says-who\/","title":{"rendered":"COVID: Omicron sub-variant not more severe than original, says WHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that the BA.2 variant of the Omicon coronavirus strain is not more severe than the original BA.1 strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Maria Van Kerkhove, a senior WHO official, was reporting the findings of a committee of experts tracking the evolution of the virus during an online question and answer session on Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Omicron has four lineages<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0(variants) \u2014 BA.1, BA.1.1, BA.2 and BA.3 \u2014 with BA.1 being the original Omicron variant and accounting for the vast majority of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/02\/who-almost-90m-covid-cases-of-omicron-variant-recorded-in-10-weeks\/\">Omicron<\/a> cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">Kerkhove said based on a sample of people from various countries \u201cwe are not seeing a difference in severity of BA.1 compared to BA.2\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cSo this is a similar level of severity as it relates to risk of hospitalisation. And this is really important, because in many countries they\u2019ve had a substantial amount of circulation, both of BA.1 and BA.2,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">In a subsequent statement on Tuesday, the WHO said as part of its on-going work to track variants, its technical advisory group on SARS-CoV-2 virus evolution (<a href=\"https:\/\/worldhealthorganization.cmail19.com\/t\/d-l-aukkuht-ilfjyiip-y\/\"><span class=\"s4\">TAG-VE<\/span><\/a>) met to discuss the latest evidence on the Omicron variant of concern, including its sublineages BA.1 and BA.2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">It said based on available data of transmission, severity, reinfection, diagnostics, therapeutics and impacts of vaccines, the group reinforced that the \u201cBA.2 sublineage should continue to be considered a variant of concern and that it should remain classified as Omicron\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cThe group emphasized that BA.2 should continue to be monitored as a distinct sublineage of Omicron by public health authorities,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s2\">\u201cWHO will continue to closely monitor the BA.2 lineage as part of Omicron and requests countries to continue to be vigilant, to monitor and report sequences, as well as to conduct independent and comparative analyses of the different Omicron sublineages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The World Health Organisation (WHO) has disclosed that the BA.2 variant of the Omicon coronavirus strain is not more severe than the original BA.1 strain.
