{"id":154784,"date":"2022-02-28T05:17:47","date_gmt":"2022-02-28T04:17:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=154784"},"modified":"2022-02-28T05:17:47","modified_gmt":"2022-02-28T04:17:47","slug":"presidency-reacts-to-video-of-ukrainian-police-blocking-nigerians-from-boarding-busestrains-to-polish-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/28\/presidency-reacts-to-video-of-ukrainian-police-blocking-nigerians-from-boarding-busestrains-to-polish-border\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidency reacts to video of Ukrainian police blocking Nigerians from boarding buses,trains to Polish border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Presidency has reacted to video report on the social media where the Ukrainian police and security personnel refused to allow Nigerians to board buses and trains heading towards the Ukraine-Poland border.<\/p>\n<p>The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement issued last night said that it is paramount that everyone is treated with dignity and without favour.<\/p>\n<p>The Presidency expressed dismay that in one of the video widely circulating on social media, a Nigerian mother with her young baby was filmed being physically forced to give up her seat to another person.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read: \u201cWhile efforts to begin talks between Russia and Ukraine are underway, paramount on our minds is the safety and human rights of some four thousand Nigerian citizens and many others from friendly African nations today stranded in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/27\/russia-ukraine-crisis-fg-directs-fleeing-nigerians-to-four-polish-borders-over-100-escape-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a long history dating back to decades of Nigerians and other Africans studying in Ukraine, particularly medicine. The majority of Nigerian citizens in the country today are university-enrolled students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom video evidence, first-hand reports, and from those in contact with their wards and\/or Nigerian consular officials there have been unfortunate reports of Ukrainian police and security personnel refusing to allow Nigerians to board buses and trains heading towards the Ukraine-Poland border.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one video widely circulating on social media, a Nigerian mother with her young baby was filmed being physically forced to give up her seat to another person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also separate reports of Polish officials simply refusing Nigerian citizens\u2019 entry into Poland from Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne group of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/26\/why-evacuation-of-nigerian-students-is-not-possible-ukraine-ambassador-to-nigeria-tells-fg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigerian students<\/a> having been repeatedly refused entry into Poland have concluded they have no choice but to travel again across Ukraine and attempt to exit the country via the border with Hungary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, it said, \u201cWe understand the pain and fear that is confronting all people who find themselves in this terrifying place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also appreciate that those in official positions in security and border management will in most cases be experiencing impossible expectations in a situation they never expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut, for that reason, it is paramount that everyone is treated with dignity and without favour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll who flee a conflict situation have the same right to safe passage under UN Convention and the colour of their passport or their skin should make no difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a nation, we are proud of those educated in Kyiv and Kharkiv and other cities and centres of learning who have returned to Nigeria to perform great service for our nation and our people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the generosity of spirit of the Ukrainian people that would never have been possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pray for those directly affected by this conflict.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNigeria, with our 200 million people, support all and every diplomatic effort to bring this war to an end.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Presidency has reacted to video report on the social media where the Ukrainian police and security personnel refused to allow Nigerians to board buses and trains heading towards the Ukraine-Poland border.
