{"id":155329,"date":"2022-03-01T06:41:30","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T05:41:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=155329"},"modified":"2022-03-01T06:41:30","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T05:41:30","slug":"buhari-pia-will-help-us-benefit-from-rising-crude-oil-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/buhari-pia-will-help-us-benefit-from-rising-crude-oil-prices\/","title":{"rendered":"Buhari: PIA will help us benefit from rising crude oil prices"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) will help Nigeria benefit from rising oil prices.<\/p>\n<p>The Petroleum Industry Act (PIA)\u00a0<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0provides a new institutional, regulatory and fiscal framework for Nigeria\u2019s oil and gas industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Buhari, represented by Timipre Sylva, minister of state for petroleum resources, said this on Monday at the 5th Nigeria International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/07\/nnpc-will-deepen-natural-gas-utilisation-to-reduce-energy-poverty-kyari\/\">Energy<\/a> Summit (NIES 2022) in Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last week, global oil prices <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">above $100 a barrel, for the first time since September 2014, with escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cCrude oil prices are on the rise again after turning negative in April 2020. It is a great opportunity for us as a country,\u201d Buhari said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWith the PIA in place, there should be no excuses. The enabling investment environment which has been the bane of the industry has been taken care of by provisions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/04\/pia-reps-move-to-transfer-assets-of-defunct-nnpc\/\">PIA<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere is now a level of certainty for the regulatory, administrative and fiscal framework and the legitimate grievances of host communities most impacted by activities of the industry has been addressed by the Act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, in a bid to demonstrate the government\u2019s seriousness, the present administration did not delay the implementation of PIA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe moved quickly and scrapped the existing agencies and replaced them with new ones. We have inaugurated their new Chief Executives too,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe also ensured the incorporation of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (<a href=\"http:\/\/placng.org\/lawsofnigeria\/laws\/C20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>CAMA<\/strong><\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe NNPCL is a limited liability company now and our target is to make it the biggest, the most capitalised and the most profitable company in the whole of Africa.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The president further told the summit that Nigeria had adopted gas as its transition fuel as the world moves towards cleaner sources of energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said this informed the administration\u2019s Decade of Gas initiative, which aims to transform Nigeria into a gas-based industrialised nation through enhanced and accelerated gas revolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe will ensure further optimal exploitation and utilisation of the country\u2019s vast natural gas resources,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cGiven the country\u2019s potential of about 600 trillion cubic feet, natural gas has the enormous potential to diversify and grow Nigeria\u2019s economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are fully aware that energy transition raises the bar in terms of environmental, social and governance demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe do not have to panic. We are already building blocks and bricks that will ensure seamless energy transition as the country joins in the race for net-zero carbon emission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The president said Nigeria is prepared to face the global demand for cleaner energy sources with the enactment of PIA, successful completion of the 2020 marginal oilfields bid round and the decade of the gas initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are waiting to deliberate on the strategy paper from this summit and incorporate critical parts of it into government\u2019s policies where necessary,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>President Muhammadu Buhari has disclosed that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) will help Nigeria benefit from rising oil prices.
