{"id":155612,"date":"2022-03-01T15:23:40","date_gmt":"2022-03-01T14:23:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=155612"},"modified":"2022-03-01T15:24:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T14:24:31","slug":"just-in-reps-vote-autonomy-for-lg-state-legislature-judiciary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/just-in-reps-vote-autonomy-for-lg-state-legislature-judiciary\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST IN: Reps vote autonomy for LG, State Legislature, Judiciary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The lower chamber of the National Assembly, House of Representatives has voted for financial and administrative autonomy for local government councils across the Federation.<\/p>\n<p>The House also voted to amend the Constitution to grant autonomy to State Legislature and Judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bill that seeks to grant the National Assembly the power to override a presidential veto on an amendment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/23\/senate-reveals-mode-of-voting-on-constitution-review\/\">constitution<\/a> failed to muster the required 288 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Two hundred and eighty-four members voted yes to the amendment.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA has earlier reported that Senate on Monday urged the 36 Governors to grant autonomy to judiciary.<\/p>\n<p>It insisted autonomy for judiciary is non-negotiable.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, made the call while fielding questions from reporters in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>Bamidele said it is laughable to be grappling with judicial autonomy at this stage of the nation\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) had declared an industrial action and nationwide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/16\/judiciary-workers-shun-governors-appeal-fix-nationwide-protest-for-april-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a>\u00a0to compel governors to obey the 1999 constitution (as amended) and Executive Order 10 which granted autonomy to judiciary in the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The lower chamber of the National Assembly, House of Representatives has voted for financial and administrative autonomy for local government councils across the Federation.
