{"id":155829,"date":"2022-03-02T05:05:37","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T04:05:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=155829"},"modified":"2022-03-02T05:05:37","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T04:05:37","slug":"fraud-abuja-businessman-ordered-to-clean-church-for-90-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/02\/fraud-abuja-businessman-ordered-to-clean-church-for-90-days\/","title":{"rendered":"Fraud: Abuja businessman ordered to clean church for 90 days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>27- year-old businessman, Ejaigu Doland, has been ordered to clean the premises of the Saint John Mary Vianney Catholic Church, Kubwa, Abuja for 90 days over attempted cheating.<\/p>\n<p>Doland pleaded guilty to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/24\/ex-revenue-officer-bags-three-years-imprisonment-over-n4-6m-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud<\/a> filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and begged the court for leniency.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering his ruling, Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya of the FCT High Court in Kubwa, ordered Doland to report to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/22\/lagos-church-workers-charged-with-alleged-n13m-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">church<\/a> every day at 9 am, and sign in and out upon completion of the service.<\/p>\n<p>Ogbonnaya said failure to perform the community service would lead to a reversal of the sentence to a correctional facility.<\/p>\n<p>She warned him to desist from committing crimes and be of good behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, the EFCC Counsel, Mariya Sherriff, told the court that a plea bargain agreement had been signed by the defence counsel, Calistus Aneke, and the terms were adopted.<\/p>\n<p>Sherriff said the agreement is pursuant to Section 270 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, adding that Doland agreed to forfeit proceeds of the crime to the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proceeds include a N300, 000 bank draft, his HP laptop, iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy cell phone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She, however, prayed the court to sentence Doland accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The defence counsel told the court that Doland was remorseful having spent a long weekend in the correctional centre, following the adjournment of the matter for sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy client has seen life differently within the period of his stay in the correctional facility and has taken out time to reflect on his misdeeds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge the court to give him a second chance and temper justice with mercy as he has accepted his wrong by pleading guilty, \u201d Aneke said.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution counsel had told the court that Doland created a social media account misrepresenting himself to be Elliott Camfield, a cryptocurrency expert, with intentions to defraud a foreign citizen in September 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The offence, she said, contravened the provisions of Section 320 of the Penal Code and was punishable under Section 322.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>27- year-old businessman, Ejaigu Doland, has been ordered to clean the premises of the Saint John Mary Vianney Catholic Church, Kubwa, Abuja for 90 days over attempted cheating.
