{"id":157636,"date":"2022-03-05T19:42:32","date_gmt":"2022-03-05T18:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=157636"},"modified":"2022-03-05T19:44:40","modified_gmt":"2022-03-05T18:44:40","slug":"adegboruwa-new-police-dress-code-illegal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/05\/adegboruwa-new-police-dress-code-illegal\/","title":{"rendered":"Adegboruwa: New police dress code illegal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ebun Adegboruwa, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has described the new dress code for female police officers as illegal.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the lawyer.<\/p>\n<p>According to the lawyer,\u00a0the new dress code should be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that\u00a0on Friday that Nigeria Police Force approved a new dress code that allows female <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/04\/igp-approves-new-dress-code-for-female-police-officers\/\">police officers<\/a> to voluntarily wear stud earrings, headscarves under their berets, or peak caps while in uniform.<\/p>\n<p>But Adegboruwa said the \u201cnew dress code of the Nigerian police is illegal, ultra vires and should be reversed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cOn March 4, 2022, the Inspector-General of Police purported to unveil a new dress code for the Nigeria Police Force, especially female officers, who are to be allowed to wear coverings or hijab, etc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe religion of public officers, including members of the security agencies, should be a private matter to them. The Inspector-General of Police is not competent to use the platform of his office to enforce religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSection 10 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria stipulates that government and all its agencies should be neutral in religious matters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSection 42 of the same Constitution prohibits discrimination in all its ramifications. In this regard, there will be no end to confusion attending the new dress code prescribed by the IGP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat will be the official uniform for policewomen who are in the Catholic Church?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow should policemen and women who are in the Celestial Church dress up when the practice of their church is against wearing shoes at all?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd how should traditionalists who are in the police force dress up, with charms and amulets round their uniforms?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Nigeria Police has existed as an institution since 1945 and it is strange that of all the issues confronting that agency, such as low morale, poor welfare, poor infrastructure, poor training, poor welfare, etc, religious adornment should be the priority of the Inspector-General of Police.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police should focus on combating crime, improve citizens engagement and help guaranty safety of lives and property.
