{"id":157701,"date":"2022-03-06T04:54:34","date_gmt":"2022-03-06T03:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=157701"},"modified":"2022-03-06T04:54:34","modified_gmt":"2022-03-06T03:54:34","slug":"us-to-offer-kyari-legal-representation-keeps-mum-on-extradition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/06\/us-to-offer-kyari-legal-representation-keeps-mum-on-extradition\/","title":{"rendered":"US to offer Kyari legal representation, keeps mum on extradition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Justice of the United States of America has declined comments on the planned extradition of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.<\/p>\n<p>According to PUNCH, the justice department, however, reiterated that Kyari is facing charges filed in 2021 which led to his indictment, adding that he would be offered legal representation in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to an email to an inquiry, Thom Mrozek, the Director of media relations of the United States Attorney\u2019s Office said, \u201c We will not have any comment in relation to a pending extradition request for any defendant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn relation to Mr Kyari, he already faces charges that we filed last year in Los Angeles after a federal grand jury issued an indictment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can tell you that all criminal defendants in the United States are entitled to legal representation,\u201d PUNCH reports.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/01\/breaking-police-commission-suspends-dcp-abba-kyari-over-huspuppi-saga\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kyari was suspended<\/a> in July 2021 by the Inspector- General of Police, Usman Baba, for alleged involvement in a $1.1 million Internet fraud allegedly perpetrated by Hushpuppi and four others; AbdulRahman Juma (Abdul); Vincent Chibuzo (Kelly); Rukayat Fashola (Morayo); and Bolatito Agbabiaka (Bolamide).<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Bureau of Investigation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/02\/hushpuppi-paid-abba-kyari-n8m-to-detain-chibuzo-fbi-makes-fresh-revelation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a> had alleged that Hushpuppi paid $20,600 to two bank accounts allegedly provided by Kyari on January 20, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>FBI Special Agent, Andrew Innocenti, said he obtained voice calls and WhatsApp conversations between Kyari and Hushpuppi, adding that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/16\/abba-kyaris-brother-received-n279m-from-hushpuppi-others-police-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hushpuppi<\/a> also paid the police officer N8m or $20,600 for the arrest and detention of a \u201cco-conspirator,\u201d Chibuzo Vincent.<\/p>\n<p>The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/03\/malami-reveals-why-fg-delayed-approval-for-dcp-abba-kyaris-extradition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malami<\/a>, SAN, in a statement by his Media Aide, Umar Gwandu, last week stated that the Nigerian government was willing to extradite Kyari to the United States where he has been indicted for his role in an international fraud involving Hushpuppi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Justice of the United States of America has declined comments on the planned extradition of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari.
