{"id":159660,"date":"2022-03-10T05:23:36","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T04:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=159660"},"modified":"2022-03-10T05:23:36","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T04:23:36","slug":"ekiti-how-soldiers-turned-commercial-driver-to-a-sweeper-for-refusing-to-part-with-bribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/10\/ekiti-how-soldiers-turned-commercial-driver-to-a-sweeper-for-refusing-to-part-with-bribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Ekiti: How soldiers turned commercial driver to a sweeper for refusing to part with bribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A commercial driver (names withheld) was ordered by some soldiers to sweep their surroundings for refusing to offer them bribe at the army checkpoint in Ikun-Ekiti.<\/p>\n<p>The incident, which reportedly occurred on Wednesday close to the Ekiti Diary Ranch around past 5:30pm lasted for over 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>According to Daily Trust, in annoyance, one of the soldiers said, \u201cThis time, we will not take no for an answer, you (driver) must give us money, otherwise we will not allow you to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while the driver, who was coming from Abuja, was still pleading with them, he was ordered to get a broom and sweep as a form of punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/10\/they-attacked-me-cut-my-face-3sc-striker-brutalised-by-soldiers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soldiers<\/a>, who sat on white plastic chairs, mocked the driver while the incident lasted.<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned publication reported that some of the passengers shared similar experiences of the past.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was how they ordered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/10\/06\/police-arrest-commercial-driver-for-arranging-kidnap-of-passengers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">commercial driver<\/a> the other day to cut grass for several minutes while passengers were left inside his vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn another instance, the \u2018culprit\u2019 was made to kneel down inside the sun simply because he refused to part with money. We are not saying they should not do their work, but not to the detriment of passengers who most times are helpless and suffer the consequences of their actions on businesses and appointments\u201d, Mrs Chinyere, one of the passengers, noted.<\/p>\n<p>Many commercial drivers preferred to use the Jebba\/Niger route to Abuja than Ekiti because of the several checkpoints which they said lead to delay, Daily Trust reports.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A commercial driver (names withheld) was ordered by some soldiers to sweep their surroundings for refusing to offer them bribe at the army checkpoint in Ikun-Ekiti.
