{"id":16001,"date":"2021-04-01T06:27:58","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T05:27:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=16001"},"modified":"2021-04-01T06:27:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T05:27:58","slug":"biden-declares-march-31-transgender-day-of-visibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/01\/biden-declares-march-31-transgender-day-of-visibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden declares March 31 Transgender Day of Visibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US President Joe Biden on Wednesday issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing March 31st as Transgender Day of Visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The day is now dedicated to celebrating transgender people and bringing awareness to the discrimination and violence they face every day.<\/p>\n<p>In his proclamation, Biden said Trans Day of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/19\/video-joe-biden-falls-over-three-times-trying-to-climb-stairs-to-board-air-force-one\/\">Visibility<\/a> recognizes the generations of activism by transgender and nonbinary people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir trailblazing work has given countless transgender individuals the bravery to live openly and authentically,\u201d Biden wrote. \u201cThis hard-fought progress is also shaping an increasingly accepting world in which peers at school, teammates and coaches on the playing field, colleagues at work, and allies in every corner of society are standing in support and solidarity with the transgender community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden explained that trans people \u201cstill face systemic barriers to freedom and equality,\u201d such as higher rates of violence, harassment and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;Nearly 1 in 3 trans people have experienced homelessness and they also face discrimination in employment, housing, health care and public accommodations.&#8221; Biden said<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe crisis of violence against transgender women, especially transgender women of color, is a stain on our Nation\u2019s conscience. Forty-four transgender people were killed in the United States last year, a record; 23 of them were Black trans women.&#8221; he added<\/p>\n<p>Biden said his administration has already started implementing new policies to protect trans people, such as the executive order he issued on the first day of his presidency to expand discrimination protections for LGBTQ people under federal laws such as the Affordable Housing Act.<\/p>\n<p>He also mentioned, \u201cthe first openly transgender <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/17\/joe-biden-i-believe-putin-is-a-killer-hell-pay-a-price\/\">American<\/a> to be confirmed by the United States Senate\u201d Rachel Levine, the assistant secretary for health and \u201cpatriotic transgender service members, who are once again able to proudly and openly serve their country\u201d a reference to his executive order undoing former President Donald Trump\u2019s ban on transgender people serving in the military.<\/p>\n<p>Biden also called on Congress to pass the Equality Act, a sweeping bill that would grant LGBTQ people protections from discrimination in employment, housing, education, credit, jury service, and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo more fully protect the civil rights of transgender Americans, we must pass the Equality Act and provide long-overdue Federal civil rights protections on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity,\u201d Biden wrote. \u201cIt will serve as a lasting legacy to the bravery and fortitude of the LGBTQ+ movement.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>US President Joe Biden on Wednesday issued the first presidential proclamation recognizing March 31st as Transgender Day of Visibility.
