{"id":162690,"date":"2022-03-16T12:42:22","date_gmt":"2022-03-16T11:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=162690"},"modified":"2022-03-16T12:42:22","modified_gmt":"2022-03-16T11:42:22","slug":"35m-nigerians-not-connected-to-telecoms-digital-financial-services-ncc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/16\/35m-nigerians-not-connected-to-telecoms-digital-financial-services-ncc\/","title":{"rendered":"35m Nigerians not connected to telecoms, digital financial services &#8211; NCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Executive vice-chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Danbatta has disclosed that 35 million Nigerians do not have access to telecommunications and digital financial services.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed on Tuesday in Abuja by Danbatta during an<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0event to commemorate World Consumer Rights Day 2022, with the theme \u2018Fair Digital Finance\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs many as 35 million Nigerians are yet to have access to telecommunications services, and by implication, they lack access to digital financial services,\u201d Danbatta said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis situation denies these Nigerians access to digital financial inclusion. It is a challenge that is attributable to the inadequacy of both wireless and fibre connectivity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/05\/buhari-has-scored-high-marks-in-creation-of-jobs-infrastructure-keyamo\/\">infrastructure<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe fact remains that more citizens will embrace the digital financial culture when they have access to telecom services in the distant, isolated, unserved and underserved communities where they dwell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The NCC boss emphasised the need for increased investments in fixed and wireless infrastructure to boost financial inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are therefore conscious of the urgency of increasing investment in both fixed and wireless infrastructure,\u201d Danbatta said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis will make the target of at least 80 percent level of financial inclusion in about four years possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe commission has thus licensed the infrastructure companies (Infracos), which are to provide the fibre from landing ports to the hinterland of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cA key focus in this regard is to provide broadband connectivity, especially in the 774 local government areas in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere would be further actions to enable Infracos to commence operations as the commission recognises that fibre is the long-term solution to the volume of transactions in the financial services sector.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He called on stakeholders in the digital finance sector to protect consumers from financial losses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Danbatta further disclosed that the commission would soon establish telecom consumer assistance, resolution and enquiries (TELCARE) desks at strategic locations across the country to provide information to telecom consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In 2019, about 40 million Nigerians were living without access to telecoms services.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Executive vice-chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Umar Danbatta has disclosed that 35 million Nigerians do not have access to telecommunications and digital financial services.
