{"id":163870,"date":"2022-03-18T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T17:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=163870"},"modified":"2022-03-18T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T17:55:00","slug":"uk-based-nigerian-lawyer-fined-45000-for-making-erotic-remark-at-female-interviewee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/18\/uk-based-nigerian-lawyer-fined-45000-for-making-erotic-remark-at-female-interviewee\/","title":{"rendered":"UK-based Nigerian lawyer fined \u00a345,000 for making erotic remark at female interviewee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>48-year-old United Kingdom-based Nigerian lawyer, Victor Nwosu, has been fined almost \u00a345,000 for making erotic remarks at a female interview candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Nwosu, said to head of a law firm, was quoted as telling the 22-year-old female candidate \u2018mmm, I like what I see\u2019 during the interview.<\/p>\n<p>According to Metro UK, the victim told Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal that Nwosu informed her that \u201cI only employ beautiful women\u201d and asked whether she had a boyfriend.<\/p>\n<p>The candidate, who has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/16\/reps-ask-fg-to-give-automatic-employment-to-1st-class-graduates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first-class degree<\/a> and a masters, had applied to be a paralegal but was left sobbing after the traumatic interview.<\/p>\n<p>The victim said Nwosu undressed me with his eyes and I felt like a piece of meat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said I was very, very beautiful. He told me that I have to wear skirts when I come into work, he doesn\u2019t like it when women wear trousers,\u201d she said while narrating the incident to her friends.<\/p>\n<p>The woman, however, rejected his offer of a job at DCK Solicitors in north London and reported him to prevent other women from being in a \u2018similar position\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>She told the tribunal: \u2018The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/02\/21\/manchester-united-to-interview-four-candidates-after-finalizing-managerial-shortlist-full-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> was quite traumatic for me, it was the first paralegal role that I had ever applied for.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I felt so violated as he was in a position of power as I was in an interview\u2026 I went home and cried.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I felt that I could not go into the profession, I built up my hopes of what it would be like and it was crushing. I was not going to make a complaint as I thought he was in a position of power and no one would believe me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I was so horrified by how he behaved I felt I would be trading in my dignity to work there.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Nwosu, who denied all the allegations, said he was happily married and called the case \u2018female activism gone wrong\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cShe has the power, that\u2019s why I am here [because] she\u2019s applied overt activism [and] I am the victim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s embarrassed me and brought me here, she has the power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said it would be \u2018rude\u2019 for the tribunal to believe the woman over him, \u2018a solicitor of the Supreme Court\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>But the panel found his remarks had \u2018sexual connotations\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The SDT fined Nwosu \u00a320,000 for his conduct and ordered him to pay \u00a323,550 costs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>48-year-old United Kingdom-based Nigerian lawyer, Victor Nwosu, has been fined almost \u00a345,000 for making erotic remarks at a female interview candidate.
