{"id":16510,"date":"2021-04-02T11:28:34","date_gmt":"2021-04-02T10:28:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=16510"},"modified":"2021-04-02T11:28:34","modified_gmt":"2021-04-02T10:28:34","slug":"48-killed-many-injured-after-train-crashes-into-truck-in-taiwan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/02\/48-killed-many-injured-after-train-crashes-into-truck-in-taiwan\/","title":{"rendered":"48 killed, many injured after train &#8216;crashes into truck&#8217; in Taiwan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A train carrying around 490 people crashed into a truck and derailed killing at least 48 people and more than 100 others injured in eastern Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>The train was said to have come off the rails in a tunnel just north of Hualien causing some carriages to hit the wall of the tunnel after which it hit a truck that was &#8220;not parked properly&#8221; and is suspected to have slid onto the train tracks in the mountainous area, the official Central News Agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/02\/video-man-survives-ghastly-accident-after-trailer-climbed-and-crushed-his-car-in-anambra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accident<\/a> happened at around 9am local time (2am BST) and came on the first day of the four-day Qingming Tomb Sweeping Festival, Sky News reports.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-80x50.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to firefighters, between 80 and 100 people have been evacuated from the first four carriages of the train, while carriages five to eight have &#8220;deformed&#8221; and are hard to gain access to.<\/p>\n<p>The firefighters added that about 70 people remain trapped in the wreckage and rescue efforts are ongoing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16514\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-4.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-4-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The crash is the island&#8217;s worst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/30\/amaechi-opens-up-on-delayed-china-loan-approval-says-selfish-lawmakers-put-nigeria-in-jeopardy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rail<\/a> disaster in at least four decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our train crashed into a truck,&#8221; one man said in a video aired on Taiwanese television, showing pictures of the wreckage. &#8220;The truck came falling down.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Images of the crash scene showed some carriages inside the tunnel crumbled and ripped apart from the impact.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16512\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/02\/Train-clash-2-86x64.jpg 86w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With much of the train still trapped in the tunnel, escaping passengers were forced to scale doors, windows and roofs to reach safety.<\/p>\n<p>The last major rail crash in the country was in 2018 when an express train derailed while negotiating a tight corner on the northeast coast, killing at least 18 people and injuring nearly 200.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A train carrying around 490 people crashed into a truck and derailed killing at least 48 people and more than 100 others injured in eastern Taiwan.
