{"id":165353,"date":"2022-03-22T07:38:12","date_gmt":"2022-03-22T06:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=165353"},"modified":"2022-03-22T07:38:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T06:38:12","slug":"we-are-working-with-stakeholders-to-address-current-issues-in-power-sector-says-nerc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/we-are-working-with-stakeholders-to-address-current-issues-in-power-sector-says-nerc\/","title":{"rendered":"We are working with stakeholders to address current issues in power sector, says NERC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba has stated that stakeholders in the power industry are working to address the current challenges in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that th<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">e national power grid had collapsed twice last week<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0amid fuel scarcity, a hike in fuel price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Monday by Garba<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0during an interactive session with journalists after the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) meeting in Lagos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Present at the meeting were top officials of NERC, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Generation Companies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/14\/gencos-blame-weak-transmission-for-erratic-power-supply\/\">(GenCos)<\/a> and Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Garba, the meeting was in line with the directive of Abubakar Aliyu, minister of power, for stakeholders to work together to restore the normal distribution of electricity and to improve supply nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He reiterated the shortage of gas supply to power plants, the collapse of the national grid, illiquidity of the industry, huge metering gap and infrastructure deficit as some of the challenges bedevilling the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said the government planned to ensure that the thermal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/15\/just-in-blackout-as-power-plants-breakdown-in-nigeria\/\">power plants<\/a> are working optimally and that the grid was stable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Garba said NERC had approved a special gas pricing for emergency contracting of gas from the Nigerian Gas Marketing Company Ltd for the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NPDHC) to optimise utilisation of its power plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, it is expected that about 800MW would be generated from the NDPHC plants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The NERC boss said the gas pipeline affected by acts of vandalism had been restored.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that the \u201cpigging\u201d of the gas pipeline supplying gas to the Odukpani Power Plant was scheduled for completion on March 21 (today) to ramp up generation by about 400MW.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On tariff adjustments, Garba said the review was in line with the tariff methodology adopted by NERC for periodic adjustments of tariffs based on inflation, exchange rates and gas pricing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On his part, Sule Abdulaziz, managing director, TCN, said the current administration had spent over N1 trillion on strengthening the transmission network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Abdulaziz said the TCN had the capacity to wheel 8,000MW but was currently receiving 3,500MW from the GenCos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He apologised for the recent collapse of the national gride.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba has stated that stakeholders in the power industry are working to address the current challenges in the sector.
