At least two elderly people have died while queueing up for the commodity.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the decision to position troops at petrol stations came after the incidents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least two army personnel will be deployed at every fuel pump,\u201d Nilantha Premaratne, military spokesperson,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/crisis-hit-sri-lanka-sends-troops-oversee-fuel-distribution-2022-03-22\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>told Reuters.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Premaratne, however, added that the soldiers would only help to organise distribution and would not be involved in crowd control.<\/p>\n<p>Ramesh Pathirana, a government spokesperson, was also quoted as saying that the decision to deploy the military was in response to complaints of stockpiling and inefficient distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe military has been deployed to help the public, not to curtail their human rights,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lanka has disclosed that it has deployed soldiers to filling stations across the country to intervene in the ongoing crisis caused by petrol scarcity.
