{"id":170323,"date":"2022-03-31T13:55:25","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=170323"},"modified":"2022-03-31T13:58:12","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T12:58:12","slug":"akinwumi-adesina-250m-africans-go-on-empty-stomach-daily","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/31\/akinwumi-adesina-250m-africans-go-on-empty-stomach-daily\/","title":{"rendered":"Akinwumi Adesina: 250m Africans go on empty stomach daily"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Akinwumi Adesina has evaluated that atleast 250 million Africans go on an empty stomach from dusk to dawn.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in an article recently published on the AfDB\u2019s website and titled, \u2018It\u2019s time to nourish Africa once and for all\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Adesina said persistent food shortages mean that Africans struggle to put food on the table.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, hunger has become a way of life in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>He said food systems across the continent were failing to deliver diets that are healthy, affordable, secure and safe for vast swathes of its population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlmost 250 million men, women and children across the continent go on an empty stomach from dawn to dusk,\u201d the article reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to a 2019 study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/01\/31\/african-union-suspends-burkina-faso-after-coup\/\">African Union<\/a>, 56 million children under the age of 5 years are chronically undernourished, and 13 million are at risk of starvation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, African countries have failed to make the investments necessary to provide sustainable, healthy diets for their citizens. We cannot go on in this way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetter nutrition in African countries is the foundation to advance health and well-being, educational attainment, prosperity and equity. It is time to deliver food security at scale and nourish Africa once and for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting the role of the AfDB in ensuring proper nutrition on the continent, Adesina said over the past six years, almost 76 million people have benefited from agricultural technologies for food security through our Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZs), which are promoted by the African Development Bank in partnership with other institutions, provide world-class infrastructure to develop competitive value chains and transform rural areas into zones of prosperity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeven SAPZs have been rolled out in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Ethiopia, Guinea, Madagascar, Mali, Senegal and Togo. SAPZs are planned for the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Kenya, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda.
