{"id":170819,"date":"2022-04-01T17:01:13","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T16:01:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=170819"},"modified":"2022-04-01T17:01:13","modified_gmt":"2022-04-01T16:01:13","slug":"ndic-weve-paid-n119bn-to-depositors-creditors-of-closed-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/01\/ndic-weve-paid-n119bn-to-depositors-creditors-of-closed-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"NDIC: We\u2019ve paid N119bn to depositors, creditors of closed banks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has disclosed that it had paid a total of N119.101 billion as insured sums to\u00a0535,815 depositors, creditors, and shareholders of closed banks as of December 29, 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It also disclosed that it had paid in full insured and uninsured sums to depositors of 18 banks in liquidation.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/31\/12-nigerians-others-indicted-by-fbi-global-operations-for-multi-million-dollar-fraud\/\">NDIC<\/a> Managing Director, Bello Hassan during the corporation\u2019s Special Day at the 33rd edition of the Enugu International Trade Fair with the theme, \u201cOpening up Nigeria\u2019s business windows for competitiveness in the emerging global markets\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Hassan who was represented by the NDIC Deputy Director and Zonal Controller, South East, Stella Henshaw, said that the corporation has paid a total of N101.117bn as uninsured sums.<\/p>\n<p>He said that contributing to financial system stability by reducing the likelihood of bank runs and safeguarding depositors by providing an orderly means of resolution and payment in the event of bank failures was part of the corporation\u2019s principal public policy goals.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the theme for this year\u2019s trade fair aligns with the Federal Government\u2019s national development plans and sectoral interventions targeted at supporting small and medium scale enterprises and improving competitiveness in the international market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mandate of the NDIC focuses on the protection of depositors, especially small and less sophisticated ones against the risk of bank failure, thereby contributing to the stability of the financial system\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He called on traders and businessmen to always save money in licensed banks where their savings are protected by the NDIC and to desist from keeping hard-earned monies in homes or shops to avoid the danger of fire, theft, armed robbery floods, or other forms of losses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe corporation has promptly responded to emerging issues in the emergence of fintech and other forms of digital financial services with a view to extending deposit insurance coverage to new financial services,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He advised the public to always endeavour to report all cases of dubious activities by banks to both the NDIC and the CBN.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation has disclosed that it had paid a total of N119.101 billion as insured sums to\u00a0535,815 depositors, creditors, and shareholders of closed banks as of December 29, 2021.
