{"id":171093,"date":"2022-04-02T07:06:33","date_gmt":"2022-04-02T06:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=171093"},"modified":"2022-04-02T07:07:52","modified_gmt":"2022-04-02T06:07:52","slug":"outdoor-use-of-face-mask-optional-but-necessary-in-high-risk-areas-says-ncdc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/02\/outdoor-use-of-face-mask-optional-but-necessary-in-high-risk-areas-says-ncdc\/","title":{"rendered":"Outdoor use of face mask optional but necessary in high risk areas, says NCDC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has stated that the outdoor use of face masks is no longer mandatory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Speaking on Friday during an interview with NAN, Ifedayo Adetifa, director-general of NCDC, said the use of face masks indoors and in other high-risk settings such as public transport is still recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAs vaccination coverage rises in countries, relaxation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/01\/83-of-africans-yet-to-receive-covid-19-vaccine\/\">COVID-19<\/a>-related restrictions including mask mandates is increasing,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHowever, the recent COVID-19 surges in many countries have led to questions of whether face masks should be encouraged or required, and for how long.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cProper mask use reduces the probability of transmission between an individual who is infectious and one who is susceptible to infection and helps protect those with a high risk of infection and severe disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cExample, the elderly and those with cardiovascular and other disease and particularly in environments with a high risk of transmission \u2013 indoors \u2013 and where there is crowding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Adetifa\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">encouraged Nigerians to make use of the opportunity provided by the government to get their COVID-19 vaccine at no cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThis is our best chance at getting back to normalcy as soon as possible as a country and we must work collaboratively to ensure it is done in the quickest time possible,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"caps\">Boss Mustapha, chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) had recently stated that the\u00a0use of face masks outdoors will be based on the discretion of Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">\u201cThe PSC continues to strongly recommend the use of face masks in enclosed environment<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">s<\/span><\/span><span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s6\"><span class=\"bumpedFont15\">In open spaces, the use of face masks is discretional,\u201d he said during a COVID-19 briefing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has stated that the outdoor use of face masks is no longer mandatory.
