{"id":172362,"date":"2022-04-05T07:17:48","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T06:17:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=172362"},"modified":"2022-04-05T07:17:48","modified_gmt":"2022-04-05T06:17:48","slug":"kenya-to-pay-subsidy-arrears-amid-fuel-shortages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/05\/kenya-to-pay-subsidy-arrears-amid-fuel-shortages\/","title":{"rendered":"Kenya to pay subsidy arrears amid fuel shortages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Kenya has stated that it will pay subsidy arrears to petrol retailers this week to avert fuel shortages.<\/p>\n<p>According to the principal secretary in the petroleum and mining industry, Andrew Kamau,<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0the government owes the companies 13 billion shillings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A spike in crude oil prices forced Kenya to subsidise retail prices like other frontier economies, like Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In April 2021, it rolled out a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/19\/imf-fear-of-political-resistance-corruption-hampering-subsidy-removal-in-nigeria\/\">subsidy<\/a> policy to cushion consumers from the surge in the price of oil in international markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to a report by Reuters, the country had paid 36 billion shillings ($313 million) on subsidising fuel so far to stabilise prices at the pump and control inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In addition, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed a supplementary budget for this financial year on Monday, allocating a further 35 billion shillings to the fuel subsidy programme, his office\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/kenya-pay-subsidy-arrears-it-looks-tackle-fuel-shortages-2022-04-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">said<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kamau told\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/kenya-pay-subsidy-arrears-it-looks-tackle-fuel-shortages-2022-04-04\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that the latest jump in oil prices had caused cash flow problems at some smaller fuel retailers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, it has led to supply shortages, compounded by delays in subsidy payments to the companies by the government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is an artificial shortage,\u201d Kamau said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nigeria is gradually coming out of fuel scarcity caused by the importation of<\/span> off-spec <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">petroleum products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Nigeria paid N1.4 trillion (about $3 billion) for petrol subsidy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Government of Kenya has stated that it will pay subsidy arrears to petrol retailers this week to avert fuel shortages.
