{"id":17239,"date":"2021-04-04T06:50:13","date_gmt":"2021-04-04T05:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=17239"},"modified":"2021-04-04T06:50:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-04T05:50:13","slug":"cct-chairman-liable-to-5-year-jail-term-over-biafran-boys-comment-says-falana","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/04\/cct-chairman-liable-to-5-year-jail-term-over-biafran-boys-comment-says-falana\/","title":{"rendered":"CCT chairman liable to 5-year jail term over &#8216;Biafran boys&#8217; comment, says Falana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Popular lawyer and activist, Femi Falana has stated that the chairman of Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar risks a five-year jail term for using &#8220;Biafran boys&#8221; to describe persons he had an altercation with.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that the CCT chairman, Umar on Monday was caught on video hitting a security guard\u00a0at Banex Plaza, Wuse 2, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>In the defence of his principal, the CCT spokesperson identified as Ibraheem Al-Hassan had in a statement said\u00a0the security guard was rude and prevented Umar from using a vacant parking space.<\/p>\n<p>Al-Hassan had said the guard threatened Umar, while some \u201cBiafran boys\u201d also harassed him.<\/p>\n<p>The CCT spokesperson later said it was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/02\/assault-danladi-umar-asked-me-to-use-biafran-boys-in-his-response-cct-spokesperson\/\">Umar who asked him to use\u00a0\u201cBiafran boys<\/a><\/strong>\u201d in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Saturday, Falana said the use of the phrase constitutes xenophobia which contravenes the cybercrime law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe use of the words \u201cBIAFRA boys\u201d in the statement (produced through a computer system\u00a0or network) on the instructions of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal and distributed to the media last week constitutes a contravention of section 26 of the Cybercrimes Act 2015 which prohibits the use of \u201cracist or xenophobic material\u201d in any written or printed material which advocates, promotes or incites hatred, discrimination or violence, against any individual group of individuals, based on race, color, descent or national or ethnic origin, as well as religion if used as a pretext for any of these factors,\u201d Falana said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe person alleged to have suggested the use of the xenophobic words is liable to be prosecuted for the serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/03\/icpc-extends-probe-to-ex-jamb-registrars-children-over-alleged-n900m-fraud\/\">offence<\/a>.
