{"id":174005,"date":"2022-04-08T07:10:20","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T06:10:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=174005"},"modified":"2022-04-08T07:40:22","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T06:40:22","slug":"ghana-bans-spending-in-foreign-currencies-says-cedi-is-sole-legal-tende","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/08\/ghana-bans-spending-in-foreign-currencies-says-cedi-is-sole-legal-tende\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana bans spending in foreign currencies, says Cedi is sole legal tender"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Ghana has banned spending and transacting businesses in foreign currencies in the country.<\/p>\n<p>This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Central Bank of Ghana.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, the apex banl warned<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0citizens and companies to stop transacting business, pricing goods and services and advertising in foreign currencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the country\u2019s apex bank, it is illegal for individuals, companies, institutions, and others to engage in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/07\/gbajabiamila-nigerias-foreign-policy-should-be-clear-about-our-interest\/\">foreign exchange<\/a> business without an appropriate licence from the regulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEngaging in foreign exchange business without a licence issued by Bank of Ghana; or pricing, advertising, receipting or making payments for goods and services in foreign currency in Ghana, without written authorisation from Bank of Ghana,\u201d the statement reads.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSuch violations are punishable on summary conviction by a fine of up to seven hundred (700) penalty units or a term of imprisonment of not more than eighteen months(18) or both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The bank also cautioned the public to stop transacting business from the black market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cBank of Ghana hereby cautions the general public to desist from dealing in illegal forex activities (black market transactions), pricing, advertising, receipting or making payments for goods and services in foreign currency in Ghana, without the requisite licence or authorization from Bank of Ghana,\u201d it added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe Public is hereby notified that the sole legal tender in Ghana is the Ghana Cedi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe Bank of Ghana, in collaboration with the National Security and Law Enforcement Agencies, will clamp down on illegal foreign exchange operations. All offenders shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bank of Ghana said it has collaborated with the national security and law enforcement agencies to clamp down on illegal foreign exchange operations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The country has been trying to manage its present economic hardship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In March, the government announced a 30% salary cut for its<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0appointees to mitigate economic hardship.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Ghana has banned spending and transacting businesses in foreign currencies in the country.
