{"id":174030,"date":"2022-04-08T08:42:22","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T07:42:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=174030"},"modified":"2022-04-08T08:49:01","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T07:49:01","slug":"sec-to-investors-be-mindful-of-unregistered-investment-schemes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/08\/sec-to-investors-be-mindful-of-unregistered-investment-schemes\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC to investors: Be mindful of unregistered investment schemes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Lamido Yuguda has admonished Nigerians to be mindful of unregistered investment schemes.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Thursday by Yuguda at the<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> post-capital market committee (CMC) virtual press briefing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yuguda said any investment scheme not registered with the commission was not a bonafide capital market operator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He asked investors to always verify with SEC to know the licensed operators before investing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cSEC can register a capital market operator, and that operator in the cause of his business begins to show signs of distress, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/05\/cbn-sec-to-nigerians-verify-licence-status-of-companies-before-you-invest\/\">SEC<\/a> has an adequate mechanism to deal with this through our monitoring and enforcement arm,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yuguda expressed concern over the high level of unclaimed dividends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He said, although dividends were currently distributed electronically, there were so many unclaimed ones in the market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He attributed the unclaimed dividends to multiple subscriptions whereby some investors use various means to subscribe for more than the permitted number of shares during public offers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">He added that the number of unclaimed dividends would reduce drastically if everyone mandated their accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, SEC has invested a lot of resources and embarked on a number of investor education to ensure that people mandate their accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis process is still open, you can do that with the registrar, from commercial banks,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe also have on our website, a tool which helps you to determine any unclaimed dividend that you may have and I will encourage everyone to take advantage of these tools.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Yuguda said dividends that had not been claimed over a certain period were being transferred into a trust fund.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to him, if anyone comes forward at any given time to claim their unclaimed dividend, the fund will be able to repay those dividends without any problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The CMC is a platform for capital market stakeholders to discuss issues pertaining to the development and orderly conduct of market activities.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Lamido Yuguda has admonished Nigerians to be mindful of unregistered investment schemes.
