{"id":174346,"date":"2022-04-08T18:40:11","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T17:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=174346"},"modified":"2022-04-08T18:40:11","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T17:40:11","slug":"unicef-nigeria-must-invest-in-teachers-to-achieve-sdgs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/08\/unicef-nigeria-must-invest-in-teachers-to-achieve-sdgs\/","title":{"rendered":"UNICEF: Nigeria must invest in teachers to achieve SDGs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund has reiterated the\u00a0need for more investments in teachers, both in time and financial resources, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>This was disclosed by the UNICEF\u2019s Education Manager, Mrs Manar Ahmed at a presentation on \u2018Scaling Foundational Literacy and Numeracy in Nigeria\u2019 held in Kano on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day Media Dialogue on SDGs was aimed at promoting, protecting, advocating and collaborating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/we-are-working-with-stakeholders-to-address-current-issues-in-power-sector-says-nerc\/\">stakeholders<\/a> for the realisation of children\u2019s rights in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed said that tackling teachers\u2019 training was not enough but also ensuring action plans for improving teaching and learning in the right environment.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, Nigeria is not lacking the right policy but the country\u2019s staggering learning crisis is one of the lowest globally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn sub-Saharan Africa, 87 per cent of children are in learning poverty as they do not have basic literacy by age 10.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoal four of the SDGs is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education that promotes lifelong learning and all children by age 10 must know how to read and solve numeracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not that Nigeria lacks the right policy but Nigeria is facing a staggering crisis with learning outcomes being one of the lowest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo,\u00a070 per cent of the children in school are not achieving basic foundational skills,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She added that 27 per cent of teaching staff in Nigeria was unqualified as qualified teachers were in short supply.<\/p>\n<p>She also said there was a need to learn to read in order to read to learn to achieve the SDGs by 2030.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to do more in the structural approach of learning, and community engagement in ensuring accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStructural approach is best for the training of teachers, so on-the-job training as well as creating the right environment is important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She, therefore, commended the country for her role in making the huge changes since 2017 when the national assessment of learning outcomes was carried out.<\/p>\n<p>She said more is needed to be done to achieve the 17 goals of the SDGs by 2030 as government allocation to education must be increased.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United Nations Children&#8217;s Fund has reiterated the\u00a0need for more investments in teachers, both in time and financial resources, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
