{"id":177807,"date":"2022-04-14T23:30:54","date_gmt":"2022-04-14T22:30:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=177807"},"modified":"2022-04-14T23:30:54","modified_gmt":"2022-04-14T22:30:54","slug":"supreme-court-grants-extradition-of-nigerian-wanted-in-us-by-fbi-over-alleged-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/14\/supreme-court-grants-extradition-of-nigerian-wanted-in-us-by-fbi-over-alleged-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court grants extradition of Nigerian wanted in US by FBI over alleged fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the request for the extradition of Princewill Ugonna Anuebunwa, who is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Anuebunwa is wanted in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/13\/american-arrested-with-firearms-at-lagos-airport\/\">America<\/a> to answer charges bordering on two counts of \u201cconspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and aiding and abetting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abubakar Malami, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice made the request via the Central Authority Unit (CAU).<\/p>\n<p>Akutah Pius Ukeyima is the head of the department under the Federal Ministry of Justice in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/14\/man-connives-with-2-others-to-kidnap-girlfriend-in-abuja-moved-her-to-lagos-for-n2m-ransom\/\">Abuja.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court upheld Justice Inyang Ekwo&#8217;s June 1, 2020 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, overturning the Court of Appeal&#8217;s November 6, 2020 judgment.<\/p>\n<p>The Court of Appeal had, in a judgment marked CA\/A\/CV\/387\/2020 after Anuebunwa\u2019s suit, overturned the Federal High Court verdict, which granted the AGF\u2019s request.<\/p>\n<p>Ordering the reversal, Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, in the lead judgment read by Justice Tijani Abubakar, faulted the Court of Appeal\u2019s decision, insisting that the suspect go defend himself.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2020, Justice Mojisola Dada of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/bamises-murder-lagos-state-government-to-arraign-brt-driver-andrew-nice-today\/\">Lagos Stat<\/a>e High Court, Ikeja, Special Offences section, sentenced Chibundu Joseph Anuebunwa to one year in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Dada ordered Anuebunwa to forfeit the sum of N29.220million found in his procession to the Federal Government of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>He was found guilty on two charges of conspiracy to steal and retain stolen property contrary to Sections 411 and 328(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The convict committed the crime alongside his brother, Princewill Ugonna Anuebunwa, who was then at large.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/07\/fbi-arrests-two-men-for-posing-as-federal-officers-to-bribe-secret-service-agents\/\">FBI<\/a> filed a petition with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in July 2019, alleging that the siblings were involved in BEC, romance scams, mystery shopper fraud, and tax fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court of Nigeria has granted the request for the extradition of Princewill Ugonna Anuebunwa, who is wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), to the United States.
