{"id":177819,"date":"2022-04-15T03:24:59","date_gmt":"2022-04-15T02:24:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=177819"},"modified":"2022-04-15T03:24:59","modified_gmt":"2022-04-15T02:24:59","slug":"lagos-29-year-old-man-arrested-for-allegedly-smashing-daughters-head-on-the-floor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/15\/lagos-29-year-old-man-arrested-for-allegedly-smashing-daughters-head-on-the-floor\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos: 29-year-old man arrested for allegedly smashing daughter\u2019s head on the floor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>29-year-old man (name withheld) has been arrested by the police for allegedly smashing the head of his one-month-old daughter on the floor resulting in her death Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Thursday while parading the suspect alongside others at the State Command Headquarters, Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>Hundeyin said the suspect was reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/26\/update-navy-detains-drunk-rating-for-stabbing-shooting-lagos-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drunk<\/a> on the day he committed the crime on April 6, and tried to set himself ablaze afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect was alleged to have stopped after his wife raised an alarm that attracted neighbours in their compound, who thereafter apprehended him.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAN, the spokesman said that preliminary investigation had revealed that the suspect, immediately after the baby died, threw the corpse into an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/03\/29\/delta-24-year-old-mans-body-found-in-uncompleted-building-a-week-after-he-went-missing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncompleted property<\/a> close to their house.<\/p>\n<p>Hundeyin said that the suspect would be charged to court after the completion of the investigation by the police.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, who claimed that his action was not intentional told journalists that he was in the bathroom when he heard a knock on his door and he rushed out to pick up his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/07\/man-smashes-his-babys-skull-burns-house-in-lagos-blames-evil-spirits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">baby<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said that unfortunately, the baby slipped from his hand and hit her head on the floor and died on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImmediately I saw what I did, I dashed out of my apartment and headed straight to where I kept my gallon of petrol with the purpose of setting myself ablaze. What happened was not intentional. I am not a ritualist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t smash her head on the floor as claimed by the police. When the incident occurred, I wasn\u2019t myself anymore, I wanted to set myself ablaze so as to die alongside the baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was not happy seeing the corpse of my daughter on the floor. What was coming to my mind was to kill myself. I didn\u2019t have any disagreement with my wife on that fateful day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is true that the death of my daughter was from me, my wife was not at fault. It was true I killed my baby; it was an accident, but I am not happy. Am I a foolish person to kill my daughter? It was not intentional,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect added that it was at the point of trying to rescue the baby that she fell from his hands, and during the process, he sustained injuries which he showed to journalists.<\/p>\n<p>On the allegation that he threw the baby\u2019s corpse into an uncompleted building, he claimed that he did it as a result of fear that some residents might want to lynch him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was after I threw the corpse of my baby to the next compound that I went inside with the intention of setting myself ablaze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI regretted my action, I beg God to forgive me of my sin and bless the soul of my daughter,\u201d he summed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>29-year-old man (name withheld) has been arrested by the police for allegedly smashing the head of his one-month-old daughter on the floor resulting in her death Lagos State.
